Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Manual settings for ISO, shutter speed, aperture, etc. Video. Sound. Easy to use interface. Lots of options

We bought this camera for our vacation through Italy. It performed like a superstar. First of all, out of two weeks of heavy use, we only swapped the batteries twice (so three sets -- the original batteries, and two replacement sets). That absolutely amazed me, as we were on a heavy activity tour, and were using it constantly -- everything from video, to sound, to low light photos with and without flash. I did make sure to turn it off a lot, but towards the end of the trip I was leaving it on with the display turned off, or closed. I think that that saved the batteries.

Second, a lot of people complained about the size of the LCD. Though I would love a huge LCD, the size was fine. You're able to zoom in on the picture in the lcd, which I did often -- I wanted to make sure specific things were in focus or well lit, and I was able to see them fine. I think that the size of the LCD saved the battery life a lot as well. Even in direct sun, i could cup the LCD and see it fine.

Third, the manual settings!!! We were in a lot of dark ancient romanesque churches with no flash allowed. I set the ISO to 400 in one of the manual settings and my photos are like daylight, no flash! I left the dark settings on one of the settings, so that anytime I needed it I could just switch over easily, without having to reset the current setting.

The interface was easy. I did carry the instruction manual with me (as I got it in the mail the day before the trip, so I had some reading to do on the airplane), but I rarely had to use it except to understand what ISO does, what Fstops are, etc.

Anyway, everyone was jealous of this camera. I love that it's fully compatible with the Macintosh. Definitely a great buy.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Solidly built, takes high quality pictures, fold out display is very convienient, basic features are easy to use for a beginner, lots of advanced features for a more sophisticated user.

Weakness: Soft focus seen in some modes (especially sepia), display seems rather small.

I purchased this camera as a gift for my wife, who has previously owned several "point and shoot" 35 mm film cameras. She wanted an easy to use digital camera which also had some advanced features (especially manual controls over exposure and focus) so she could experiment with photographic techniques without consuming a lot of film. I had considered the Canon A70 which is a similar camera, but the A80 seemed a better choice for my wife at 4 megapixels, with manual controls and features comparable to the Canon S50, and the fold out display which can also fold in to protect the LCD. She has been delighted with the camera and has already taken a lot of color and black and white pictures with it. In spite of other reviews I've seen, we have not had any issues with either the fragility of the compact flash door or the camera being particularly hard on AA batteries. However, you can also purchase a set of 4 NiMH batteries and charger for less that $10 in the electronics section of at least one major discount department store (seven letters, starts with a W, ... :-) if it's an issue. The shutter is much slower than a 35 mm camera, and that has taken a little time to adjust to, but this seems the case with most digital cameras I've seen. The 32M compact flash card included with the camera is a nice size to start with, but I will probably purchase a 256M card before our next vacation.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Easy to use for beginners yet offers features that would keep an intermediate/pro happy. Good Battery Life. Have had no problems with it yet. Produces Sharp pictures.

Weakness: Software isn't all that great and seems clumsy. The Size of the A80 is a little large compared to similar choices but is of a reasonable size. LCD is a little small

A great camera especially for it's price $250. It would've been nice for the LCD to be a little larger but the Swivel screen is a good protective feature for the LCD. I would definately recommend this product.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Ease of use is outstanding! Excellent battery life, solid sturdy feel.

Weakness: Focus in dim light sometimes difficult. LCD small but adequate.

I would recommend this camera to everyone. I like it so well that I bought another one for my son in college. No one will be disappointed with this product.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Simple to use, simple to setup, very clear instructions Easy to use software. Fairly tough construction (passed my fumble fingers on tile test :-)

Weakness: Will need to get rechargeable batteries. Occasionally focusses on target other than intended in auto mode, but there is a way to override. You're likely to want additional Flash Cards as 32Mb.

I would highly recommend this to anyone as an entry to mid-level digital camera. This picture quality if very good and it is simple to do the easy pictures. I even figured out how to stitch a panorama very easily.
Has a lot of features I wasn't expecting at this level of camera.
This should serve my basic home/vacation use for many years to come.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: sturdy it was dropped once already on carpet & just fine! Can buy upgrade lens'. Many shoot'n modes and good clips w/sound

Weakness: slow shoot to shoot time. needs recharge batts. need better memory card. if you dont let camera focus on auto mode fully pics will blur

This was my first digital camera. I shopped for about three mos. I almost bought a sony but it was flimsy. I almost bought a nikon cool pix but no sound and needed a software upgrade via down load to fix problem. Settled on A-70 when A-80 Came out. My wife and I are both "height challenged" so rotating screen is huge to shoot over tall people. I dont know about the Japan vs. China mfr. but I love this thing. I got just 2 mos before my son was born and have taken all precious family moments since, prob at least 400+ and many movie clips which are unlimited as long as you have adequate battery and memory. Simple enough for my wife to take good pics but can also programme and upgrade lens'. Small enough to take everywhere & solidly built. I got 10/2003 for $299.99 but a value at more. Was so happy I bought a Canon i960 printer & love it too. :-]!!!!

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: AA Batteries; CF memory card; AF-assist beam; Movable LCD screen; Metal body gives solid feel and zoom mechanism is quick and smooth; Easy menu system; 4 MP; compact

Weakness: LCD is 1.5 inches, which is small; Aperature at telephoto zoom is f4.9, which is rather small; no external flash provision

I'm planning to relplace my Olympus C-4000 for most applications. I will still use the C-4000 with my old Vivitar 283 when I need an external flash. It works good. The C-4000 would be a perfect low-cost camera if it had a focus-assist beam. But,I get a lot of out-of-focus shots of people in clubs or on the street at night.

I hope the A80 will be better because of the focus-assist beam, but I got some out-of-focus shots in a dark setting the first time I tried it. I've turned the 9-frame auto focus mode off in favor of a single, center frame because I think the 9-frame auto focus selected the wrong object to focus on. Limited testing seems to show that the single center focus frame works better in low-light portraits. Maybe I just need to give the focusing mechanism time to do its job. (There is a nice manual focus provision on the A80.)

Surprising how similar the cameras are in concept: lots of exposure control, white balance, AA batteries, and low cost. Differences: AF assist and audio and small, tilting LCD screen on the A80, external flash connection on the C-4000 and a nice big LCD.

I like the feel of the A80 better than the C-4000 owning to the use of a lot of metal in the A80 and a smoother, quicker zoom action. The A80 is about two-thirds the size of the C-4000. I haven't made any side-by-side comparisons of the image quality, but from what I've seen, there is little difference.

I think I am really going to like the A80 a lot. It looks and feels

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Small and compact. Great Pics... Easy to use/learn. Plenty of user settings/adjustments. Pop out swivel LCD BIG+++. Good control layout. Easy to grip. Uses regular AA batteries.

Weakness: CompactFlash cover a little awkward to open. A 64meg CF Card would have been nice instead of the 32 meg it comes with. Other than that, it's a Great camera.

A friend of mine has the A70 and I really liked it and was considering going with it, but I decided to wait for the A80 to be released. Glad I did, it was worth the wait. The added features make it a great "entry level" digital camera. (I have no idea why they call this an entry level.) I think the best changes they did were the pop out/swivel LCD, upping to 4 mega pixels, and the additional user settings. I don't think you would be disappointed buying this camera.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Compact with excellent picture quality. Plenty of adjustments and manual controls for more flexibility. Several custom settings and paramenters.

Weakness: Compact flash card door seems like it could break very easily.

A simply delightful camera with 4mp that can be used on auto or full manual controls. I purchased this camera for my wife so she could join the digital revolution. My CP 5700 and 10D required too much of a learning curve for her. She was use to a point and shoot 35 mm Canon Sure Shot. The auto settings are perfect for her. She was able to pick up the camera and use it just like she did the Sure Shot.

Since I mainly use a DSLR now I was intrigued by some of the improvements over the A70 with the swivel LCD screen and the I love the AF assist beam for shots in the dark. That was one of the problems I had with my CP5700 trying to lock focus in low contrast situations. The A80 is a great little camera with many settings that more expensive cameras have. I printed up a 8x10 shot from the camera that was excellent quality. I couldn't tell any difference between the A80 and my 10D in a 4x6 print. I highly recommend this camera. Now if there is some way I can get my wife to let me use it more.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Image Quality, Ease of Use, Compact, Solid Feel, Good hand grip, Flexible Camera, Superb travel and snapshot camera!

Weakness: No Raw out, flash card is too small to be practical for my needs.

I love this camera! I took it on a trip to Europe and got excellent results, even with auto! I like the feel of the camera because it is easy to hold in one hand, unlike many of the smaller models. I got excellent battery performance with 2100mAH Rechargable Panasonic AA batteries, and I like the fact it takes non proprietary batteries. I would suggest a 256Mb flash card for this camera, as the 32Mb card provided is a bit small. Downloading to my lap top computer was very simple. The swivel mounted LCD screen is small, but very useful. I tried the camera in a variety of weather conditions both day and night, and after a short learning curve, I am very happy with the camera's performance. This is the first digital camera I have used that has convinced me that I really do not need to shoot film.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Many settings for the professional, likewise the amateur. 4 x 6 prints even from my old printer are not good they are STUNNING. Camera- light and easy to carry in pocket. Good battery life-

Weakness: Small camera body-LCD monitor should be bigger- need camera strap holders on both sides of body-the price is a little high retail-shop the web. Needs rechargeable batteries included in box.

It replaced my 2 meg Kodak 280Z I have had for three years. I researched digital cameras for at least two months prior to this purchase. Because of Cannon’s reputation AND all of my peripheral accessories with the KODAK were compatible with the new Cannon.
New user? You must know that things like rechargeable batteries, chargers, camera bags, compact flash cards and such are usually NOT included. You must purchase them separately. Keep non rechargeable AA batteries for emergency use only, digital cameras eat batteries for lunch- I only use rechargeable ones and I have three sets of those all fully charged.

My experience the past week has been one of exasperation (I didn’t read the instruction manual) to great joy. I usually do not print many pictures, most are kept and only sent on the net. The ones printed with my old Kodak were so-so ok and viewed on the screen were ok too. Now using the A80 and just medium settings around, the results were not just ok- they were INCOMPARABLY better! I think this camera is one of the best on the market-hands down. My advice is to READ the instruction manual THOROUGHLY- play, play, and play some more with it. Make many mistakes but in the process you learn and become comfortable with using it in no time. Make sure you use rechargeable batteries ( Wall Mart sells four Eveready AA 2100 m Ha ones for around 10 bucks) They lasted me four days of constant learning and training.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Professional Quality at a great price.(see comments below)

Weakness: none

Ease of Use: Excellent - It is easy to use right out of the box
Durability: Excellent - Virtually indestructible
Portability: Excellent - Tiny, and always functional
Photo Quality: Excellent - Pictures are professional grade

Lighting Conditions: Use inside & outside, with or without a flash
I would recommend this camera primarily for anyone

This is an amazing camera that never fails to come up with a great picture. I am far from a pro. but this camera's function and quality enable me to take shots that look good anyway. It even has a quality mic. that allows you to record and add sound to a picture.
I have teamed it up with the Canon i860 printer and the all I can say is WOW!(The 4x6 prints are the best!)
I upgraded from the A70 for the fold out LCD and I am very happy I did so.(great for overhead shots)

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Exceptional image quality

Weakness: None

I had compared a lot of different cameras in the 4-6 MP category. I did not find another camera come close as to the image quality: so little noise and such a great resolution of details. I have the camera now, tested it, and it is even above my expectations.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: -Manual features (lots of them) -optional lens accessories -long-lasting batt life w/ NiMH AA batts -swival LCD viewfinder

Weakness: -small LCD, 1.5" -LCD is only 68,000 pixel in resolution -not for small pocket fitting situation

Bottom line: a very budget minded digicam w/ tons of features you may not wanna pass up. Make sure to get NiMH batts, they are well worth the endurance vs. the standard alkalines.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Great pictures, easy to use, menu is easy to understand. Video is suprising good, but that was just a bonus. Vibrant colors, great shots. Moveable LCD screen.

Weakness: High motion shots are not it strength, but it still does OK. The zoom could be better, but for just shooting family shots, do you really need 10X zoom? It has never been an issue with us.

Great camera for the money, and I am extremely happy with the results so far. Very easy to use and the menu was not confusing at all. Get it, you won't be disappointed!

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Easy to use, great pictures, easy to download, long battery life, swing out lcd screen, nice click sound when shooting pictures

Weakness: lag time when taking pictures with flash, choppy video with bad sound. No low battery notification until the batteries are just about dead

This camera worked wonderfully. We took it on a one month trip to Fiji and filled up a 512 meg memory card. The pictures were great and it was nice to preview them on a television with the included cable. I knew the video wouldn't be that good but hoped for a little better but the different options were easy to use and the camera worked perfectly. This is the camara to get it's the best I've ever had

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Great color, sharp details, and the flip out screen is really helpful.

Weakness: Eats up batteries like crazy, and the zoom is difficult to adjust precisely

I've had this camera for only three days, but the pictures it takes are much clearer and sharper than I had expected. The interface is simple enough to use that I did not need to read the manual to use the camera (of course I will need to to use some of the more advanced features). I would really recommend the A80 to anyone looking to get their first digital camera.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Completely automatic to completely manual settings and everything in between, great feature set, incredible value at this price.

Weakness: small LCD, red-eye on almost all flash photos, no manual adjustment of flash output unless camera is set to completely manual, no external flash option, 16Mb memory card.

I love this camera! This is my first digital after 20+ years of shooting 35mm, and I don't think I will ever go back. Once you get used to the auto-focus and learn how to use it, the pictures are extremely sharp and clear, colors are full and vibrant, skin-tones are realistic. If you are beginner or you are a pro you will find many things to love about this camera. For the beginners, just leave it on AUTO, turn on the camera, point and shoot...it's really just that simple. For the pros, there's pretty much everything in between: manual aperture, manual shutter, manual ISO, manual focus (I could go on and on) with just about every possible combination of automatic and manual settings you could conceive.

I have always been disappointed with most cheaper flashes and the included flash is no exception. I have been having a real problem with both red-eye and washed out subjects that are too close (5 ft. or less). I have actually taped a piece of white paper over the flash to diffuse the flash output and gotten much better results since.

I also made sure to get a 256Mb CF card which can store something like 300 photos. I highly recommend you do this! The small LCD can sometimes fool you into thinking a picture looks better than it actually does, but you can get used to this quickly.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Superior quality, variety of manual features, swivel lcd

Weakness: 3x zoom is sufficient but weak, sometimes it takes too much time to autofocus

I have used this camera for about a month now, and I have really enjoyed the flexibility of the digital format combined with the high quality and easy use from a Canon camera.

The camera takes excellent pictures in most conditions. The only issue I have is that the autofocus sometimes is too slow, even in action mode. However, very few cameras in the consumer price bracket ($100-$700) can compete with the quality, features, and even speed of this camera.

I would highly recommend this camera to the willing to learn beginner, and experienced amateurs. I am somewhere in between the beginner and the experienced amateur and I have had very few (and minor) disappointments.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: beautiful, clear pics. easy to use

Weakness: the CF card it came with was too small, but I bought a 256 card and it's perfect.

I spent months looking for a camera and almost bought the A70 when this one came along. Right out of the box I was taking great pictures. I've never owned a digital camera before and I have to say, i'll never go back. I love taking dozens of pictures and just being able to download directly to my computer. I still haven't bothered to open the manual for it, i don't need it. everything a simple person like me would need is completely self-explanatory. Several of my friends are thinking about going digital and i can't say enough about the A80.

I would definetly suggest at least 2 sets of rechargable batteries. That way you're never left without life in your camera.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: flip-out screen,resolution, manual settings

Weakness: battery life, size of included CF card (although this is a weakness of pretty much all digital cameras)

I think this is a great camera for the money. The picture quality is great. I have also found the flip-out screen very useful. The screen is a bit small, but you can zoom in on pictures you have taken to get a better look at them. Shutter speed, etc., can all be set manually. The setup screens are easy to navigate.
The camera does really drain batteries; I have had the camera a week and already replaced them once. Rechargeable batteries is a must. In addition, I would recommend a larger CF card.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Small, auto as well as manual capabilities, uses AA batteries.

Weakness: No external flash capabilities, focus lock a little touchy, auto white balance problems indoors.

I've only owned this camera for a few days, but I can't say enough good things about it as an "entry-level" camera. Like many, I did a ton of research before deciding on this particular model and for me, I believe I made the right choice. As a first time digital camera owner I wanted the flexibility of a camera that would do everything for me, but allow me to grow and make more decisions on my own. I feel this camera will allow me to do that.

Some things I really like about the camera:
In review mode, you can really zoom in on the picture and scroll around to look at all the details.
There is a manual focus feature that shows a zoomed in center portion of the picture so you can really get the focus you want.
There are two custom modes that you can set to your personal preference so that you can rapidly change the camera to shoot in circumstances you find yourself in frequently (like indoor night shots).

The few problems I've seen are:
The white balance indoors is problematic, but it's easy to change the white balance settings to whatever is needed to make the shot work.
To achieve focus lock, you are supposed to press the shutter button down halfway, but many times I've ended up pushing the button all the way down and have taken the picture prematurely. However, I'm sure with practice this will be minimalized.

All in all I've very pleased with this camera and am looking forward to using it for years to come!

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Fantastic pictures! Flip out LCD screen. 4 megapixel sensor. Very easy to use menu system. Smaller size and easy to hold.

Weakness: Limited optical zoom range. Small memory card. Eats batteries (get rechargeables). LCD a little small.

Overall, this is an excellent camera. I had the A20 and was very happy with it, but upgraded when I saw the flip out and moveable LCD screen. It works really well, especially in bright light because you can tilt it. The 4 megapixel size of this camera will allow me to edit and crop pictures without making them look blocky. The menu system is very intuitive and straight forward. The camera is small, could easily fit in a shirt pocket, and really easy to hold with the larger hand grip. I just wish the optical zoom was a larger, like maybe 6x, but with with this many megapixels you can use the digital zoom without affecting picture quality too much. Make sure you get rechargeable batteries and at least a 256mb memory card. At full resolution, you don't get too many on the smaller cards.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Easy + Powerful digital camera for novices

Weakness: Shutter delay

If you are a newcomer to digital photography, especially if you come from a "point and shoot" background, this is the camera for you. Easy and intuitive, it allows you to snap impressive pictures almost at once. It's also packed with features for more sophisticated tasks, should you ever need or desire them.

I owned the Canon A40 for eight months, until it was stolen, and chose the A80 as its replacement, hoping to avoid another learning curve. Indeed, I have been taking pictures all week without even opening the manual yet. The flip out screen is a nice improvement, especially for outdoor photography.

My only criticism is the shutter delay, which seems a tiny bit longer than that of the A40, and obviously much longer than my old 35 MM camera. Otherwise, a great camera to introduce you to digital photography.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Beautiful and sharp images. Easy to understand menu system. Rugged looking construction. LCD protected when stored and it's extremely useful to be able to rotate the LCD to a convenient viewing angle.

Weakness: I'd like to have a rubberized grip. Don't wait, get rechargable batteries!

This camera gives you a lot of features for the money. The controls feel as if they're positioned where they should be (at least for me, right handed). The 9 zone focus preview lets you know before taking the shot which areas of the subject have been selected for focusing. Logical optical and digital zoom control at the shutter button. Can be remotely computer controlled via USB. I'm very happy with this camera!

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Easy to use, multiple levels of manual control, multiple settings, quick shutter, quick save, flip out viewer

Weakness: Manual settings can take a long time to set. Heavy (4 AA batteries)

This is a great digital camera for people who want just a bit more than a point and shoot camera. It has different settings for different types of shots. Portrate, fast, motion blur, night, backlit, etc. It also has 2 settings that you can completely customize. It has 3 different drive speeds, single shot, short delay, and quick delay (really short). And can capture movies.

Batter life is good, especially if you get NiMH rechargable (as you should for any digital camera). Although it uses 4 AA batteries so it's quite heavy. That could be a strength, since it's a solid feeling camera.

The view screen can piviot and rotate so you can take self photos really easily, or just not use it at all.

You can also view the pictures w/out having the lense cover open, which is great for checking out photos w/out messing up your lense.

I highly recommend this camera to someone who just want's a point and shoot with rich features. But remember, it's no SLR so changing the manual settings can be tedious.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Easy of use; english notation for modes and functions; long battery life; small size; light weight; uses standard AA batteries

Weakness: Zoom is much too quick. Difficult to make fine adjustments.

I think the A80 is superior quality. I was able to take pictures immediately. Very easy on batteries. Functions/modes very easy to understand. Outstanding documentation. Amazing battery life. Zoom is too quick.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Swiveling LCD, 4Mpixels, intuitive menus and controls

Weakness: Highlights get overblown, some purple fringing, dead/stuk pixel

I too received the A80 with a stuck or dead pixel. It was located towards the lower left of captured images. It would just stay green no matter what. Had the choice to send it to Canon for repair or send back to the store for replacement. I opted for the latter. The second unit is dead-pixel free (so far).

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Ease of use. Pictures look good. Download from camera to computer was quick. Manual easy to understand. Protected lens. LCD covered when not in use.

Weakness: none that I found in the short time I used the camera, however covered lens jammed and recording of pics was impossible.

This was my second digital camera. First one was a Sony Mavica which uses floppy disks. I still like the Sony for landscapes, however I could never take pics of people in close up mode that weren't blurred. The A80 was great for people pics - no blurred faces. Had used it quick shots of folks at a reunion and pics were great. I also used it for animal/bird pics. Problem was that I could not hold my hand still so shots were never clear. Tried with a tripod and things worked much better. AF allowed me to take pics when other camera owners could not. (had something to do with distance - close - I think). Was very satisfied with the camera. Had to return it to Canon because the camera would not "record" - lens would not extend and cover would not open. BUT - I am thinking of buying another one. The size of the camera was a little bulky, however it would fit in the purse I carry so that was a big plus. Having an LCD which can be used in more than one position a great benefit. The fact that it can be "closed" when not in use was a big plus - no scratched screens this way. There was no worry about lens caps coming off since this lens is covered when not in use.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: easy to use good, picture quality. I like the manual function as a beginner. I think using AA battery is a good idea.

Weakness: a bit large and heavy for me. customer service is not good.

I have a "stuck pixel" with my camera, that's why I am not as enthusiastic about this camera as I would have been. The customer service is not professional. Just ask me to send back my camera, and write on a piece of paper what's going wrong with my camera. I don't want to risk sedning back my 400USD camera for this!

About the battery.I didn't believe that the NiMH battery can be so powerful before I bought a set of charger and batteries. It works out really nice. I bought MAHA 100 mins charger, b/c all the reviews available recommend it. (not many reviews about batteries, though) I am not sure other brand will work as crazy. The battery just doesn't die.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: This is really a good camera.Even at high ISO values, there is no parasites. You can get clear images at every situation.

Weakness: There is only one disadvantage about this camera:Red-eyes.This is really a problem.Just try to shoot from near to your object at night.

As I said at "waeknesses" phrase, only problem about that cam is the red-eyes.I comment Canon should solve this problem.Except that, this camera has no problems. If we don't see the red eyes, this camera is perfect.Low price, wonderful picture quality(as perfect as a professionnal camera),many options that you can't find even in a professional camera.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Superb pictures on the most part, easy menu-system, good battery life and the possibility to safe your manual settings

Weakness: Soft focus on some pics, hard to focus in low light situations

I'm pleased with this camera - small format, easy to use and nice software. The only thing that I have trouble with is focusing in low light situation. I've read other reviews and this seems to be a problem for many digital cameras, though...

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Great for beginers and advanced photographers. Manual settings give you freedom to play, while auto mode is a very easy to use point and shoot. Colors are terrific! Flip out screen is great!

Weakness: Macro mode is very touchy. LCD screen is a little too small. Battery life could be longer, and card size larger.

I think this is a great camera! I was able to open the box and start shooting wonderful photos. Now that I'm into the user manual I'm really starting to have some fun with the manual settings. Pictures look great on 8 x 10's. I shopped for 2 months before purchase and it was definately worth the wait. I recommend getting rechargable batteries and a bigger compact flash card right away to avoid frustration. Flip out screen is definately a plus for those unusual angle shots, plus it folds to protect screen. This camera is worth every penny!

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Picture quality, size of camera is great, affordable.

Weakness: Dealy in time from pressing the button to take picture and when it actually takes the picture.

We really like this camera. It's very affordable compared to other digital cameras and takes very good pictures. We use it everyday to take pictures of our children.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Swivel LCD, Lots of modes to choose from, manual mode, easy to use photo software, great image quality

Weakness: small LCD, no rechargeable batteries included, no hot-shoe

Plenty of user modes for the beginner as well as manual mode for the more serious user. Great images straight from the box. Very complete manual. The accompaning software is easy to use and makes getting rid of red-eye easy. There is some red-eye on the pre-programed modes but I have used different setting and get none at all. Overall this is a very good camera that I think will suit almost anyone looking for a good digital camera

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Lots of options for those who know how to use them. The moveable LCD screen is wonderful for a variety of uses. Battery life has been great. Uses inexpensive compactflash and AA batteries

Weakness: Red Eye is an issue with Canon cameras. Some experimentation is needed to get well focused shots

This is my third digital camera, and the first that really required a learning curve. After the first week or two my pictures improved a great deal due to learning how to set the camera settings for the situation. (which is also one of it's strengths) I'm very happy with it now and would purchase it again.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Almost Best Compact in the market.. Lots of settings , Comes with good software ..

Weakness: AA batteries only Canon should create a model of rechargeable Li-Ion Battery module for this camera ..

It is Small and compact. Takes Great Pictures,
Comes with enough software all are easy to use & learn. Large Swivel LCD makes easy to shoot. The Shape of body and place of buttons is designed very well..
Provided Compact flash should be bigger than 32 if will be used for avi format movie files I recommend 512 mb CF movie quality is good!! I use SLR and actually bought as a gift but I am still asking my self if I should buy another one for my self.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Excellent battery life, retractable LCD, auto focus illuminator

Weakness: small LCD, red eye in most flash pictures, overblown highlights

I was extremely disappointed in my camera when I first took some outside pictures of my kids playing at the park. In most of the pictures the subject was not in focus and any shots that included the sky in the background were blown out.
I fixed the focus problem by switching the auto focus from "Auto Selection" to "Center". I have not figured out how to reduce the blow out problem.
The red eye is much worse than I expected. I really researched cameras before purchasing and most reviews said that the red eye was very good. This has not been the case for me. Most flash pictures have red eye.
The camera does take good pictures for the most part, but I would probably not buy this one if I had to do it over again. I think my expectations may have been too high, since this is my first switch from film SLR to digital. I will probably shell out the extra money for a digital SLR like the Digital Rebel for my next purchase.

Canon PowerShot A80 4 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Size, battery strength, flip out viewer

Weakness: Blurry Pictures in medium light (ie, family room)

After reading the raving reviews here and on c-net (and just about every where else), I bought this camera with confidence and high expectations. For the past 2 years, I have been using the camera on my sony TRV17, which takes great ~2 MP pictures with clarity and great color. 90% of my shots are of my fast moving 2 year old son in my house or backyard. 25% of these are blurry beyond use. I know what your thinking. I adjusted the settings and made manual settings that compensated to a degree, but come on. My Sony works great, the Canon could become a good skipping stone in a local lake.

I continue to see this camera highly rated, so perhaps mine is defective. The 75% of the time that the pictures come out, they are brilliant. Go figure.

This problem, along with the very small view finder would lead me to recommend another camera.
