Canon Powershot G1 3.3MP Digital Camera - Micro...

Strengths: Image Quality, Battery Life, Features

Weakness: Sports/Action photos

This is a great camera. Image quality and color are dead on and the 3MP are plenty for 8x10 photos. The shot modes are a great way to adjust camera settings for optimal use without going through the menu system. I rarely have the need to use the LCD screen, except to show off shots. The external function keys and dedicated information LCD are a great addition that kept my use of the LCD to almost zero. Battery life is amazing. I charge it up before a trip and have gone 7 days or over 200 shots on a single charge. Cannot see any reason to get a second battery unless I were to use the LCD for manual focusing. The only weakness I have had is with moving subjects. The Camera just cannot get a focus and any moving shot is blurred.

Canon Powershot G1 3.3MP Digital Camera - Micro...

Strengths: Image Quality, Features, Ease of Use

I have enjoyed this camera very much. Install of bundled software was simple and works great. Picture quality is excellent. I recommend this model to anyone looking. The price has dropped lately from the $1000 is was a couple months ago.

Canon Powershot G1 3.3MP Digital Camera - Micro...

Strengths: Manual controls, versatile, automatic, swivel lcd and protected, smart camera

Weakness: macro, takes a while to learn manual controls, movie feature should not be limited to 30 seconds but use space available on card.

This camera kicks butt! It is the first digital camera that acts like a true 35 MM maunal camera. The quality is awesome. It has the capbaility of using a 1 GIG IBM Microdrive. That is amazing. Best camera on the market for the money!

Canon Powershot G1 3.3MP Digital Camera - Micro...

Strengths: Image quality, Features, TTL Flash, Battery Life, Versatility.

Weakness: Shutter Lag, Stuck Pixels, Manual Focus, Manual Aperture unreliable, Firmware Seizures

The Good:
In both amateur/professional settings, it rocks. Images print well up to 11x14, good color/clarity. Shockingly immersive images on large monitors! Battery life superb, camera light/versatile. With 400EX TTL flash, some amazing photos, especially bounced flash.

The Bad:
I have returned SEVERAL G1s to Canon for repeated stuck pixels. To their credit, they endured this, and when they accepted no more, they fixed my camera under warranty. They certainly stand behind their product. No one else complains about this, and Canon many times stated that my case was unique. Weird.

Shutter lag is a real killer. Coupled with very poor manual focus, there is no way out of missing great timed shots.

With manual external flash, I found the manual aperture settings unreliable. Try bracketing with a non-auto flash and look at the strange gaps in exposure settings, especially around f4. Weird.

Camera seized up several times, especially during the 2 second review when trying to delete. Could only recover by removing battery.

The G1 is best described as an auto (idiot box) posed picture camera, with great potential for versatility, but the 'youth' of digicam really shows up on this unit.

Would love to see how well the G2 cleared up these issues.*

Canon Powershot G1 3.3MP Digital Camera - Micro...

Strengths: From fully automatic to manual controls, this camera has it all. The user friendly interface and picture quality are superb.

Weakness: The compact flash card should be flipped so that the ridge is accessable. It is some what difficult to remove in the position it is in now.

The first day I saw this camera and all the controls I was a bit overwhelmed. By the second day I was using all of the features. Because of the excellent manual, this camera is very easy to use. I was amazed at the clarity of the images, especially at the macro level. I found that I prefer to use the P setting, which allows more control of the final product, than the AUTO setting. Although, the AUTO setting did produce excellent images. I am also impressed with the auto white balance and the tonal range of the images. An all around excellent camera.

Canon Powershot G1 3.3MP Digital Camera - Micro...

Strengths: RAZOR SHARP images. Idiot proof on full auto, compatible memory, rugged, super battery power, mobile LCD, read more...

Weakness: Nowadays with 5.0 megapixels out on $5000 SLR's I could list some, but why bother? Only one worth mentioning is purple problem on blue skies through foilage. Read below...

MIND-BLOWING!!! MUST BUY!
I read all the reviews for all the competitive models before choosing this one. NO REGRETS!
Here's the bullets:
- everlasting battery blows away Nikon, Olympus and Sony.
- RAZOR sharp 3.3 images, with RAW MODE convertible to 9MB pro TIFF files.
- IBM microdrive compatible, now up to 2GB capacity!!! (Don't waste money on non-compatible Sony Mem-stick formats)
- Took it to Europe for 5 weeks, was more than enough with extra batt and 1GB microdrive (over 400 Hi-Rez pictures fit!!!), have car battery plug for external charger from batterybank.com - great add-on if you're paranoid about charging batt inside camera.
- CRAZY close-up quality!
- was persuaded by digital-imaging.com site where competing camera brands are tested, same shots compared - Canon was far superior to both Olympus and Nikon.
- swivel LCD and wireless remote lots of fun for two.
- If I had the cash again, I would buy the Canon G2, I wouldn't even bother with looking at other brands.
- check out the Canon website for more...
- if you're a millionare go for Canon's digital SLR's.
- only slight discoloration on blue sky pictures - sometimes has a bit of purple tint, much worst on other Canon models like the S10 and S20. Tolerable on G1, probably fixed on G2.
- careful with pricing on ALL digi-cams: it's very deceptive. Double the cost advertized for the complete package worth working with-eg. digital flash, extra battery, extra memory media, case, tripod, cleaning kit...

Canon Powershot G1 3.3MP Digital Camera - Micro...

Strengths: Ease of Use and Clarity

Weakness: really none. The G-2 has a better grip

This is a fantastic Digital Camera. I would recommend it to all. Like with all digital cameras, they are light sensitive. In the dark and in the bright sun. Filters for day shooting especially in bright light are a great help. Also a flash attachment would be a great idea for low light situations. Other then that, I have absolutely no complaints. I've taking a bunch of shots and printed them on my average printer and they have all turned out very very good. Actually, way better then I expected. Email me if you have any questions.

Canon Powershot G1 3.3MP Digital Camera - Micro...

Strengths: Many features, easy to use, long lasting battery, Amazing pictures

Weakness: Only comes with 16mb flash card, occasionally in certain lighting conditions picture appears moire'd

This is our 1st digital camera, but I have used quite a few other cameras before from Sony, Kodak and Toshiba. This is by far the best of the ones I've used. It has a very intuitive interface, comes with a remote, has USB upload, and Canon makes many attachments for it. It has the weight and feel of a well made camera.

I have very little to see against this camera. I wish it had a stronger zoom but that can be remedied by purchasing the zoom lense.

We love it and it takes unbelievable pictures

Canon Powershot G1 3.3MP Digital Camera - Micro...

Strengths: Great picture quality. Lots of flexibility in exposure/camara setting. Supports CF+ cards (Microdrives). Good menu system

Weakness: Doesn't (yet) support PIM.

The G1 is a great 3.3Mpix camera for people that want both a point an shoot (set the camera to the green "Auto" setting) or the flexability of creative settings. The firmware supports most of the Canon EOS modes of operation - Aperature, Shutter, Program (tweak the auto settings) and of course fully Manual modes provide all kinds of creative settings.
This camera also has a flash hot shoe built in. The hot shoe supports all the Canon flash systems in programmable mode.
Last, the fact you can use a Microdrive makes this a great camera to bring on vacations without having to worry about uploading photos to a PC.
