Simply Stunning!

Strengths: IQ, build, weather-proofing, autofocus, dust reduction, lens-specific focus compensation

Weakness: No dedicated WB button, no ISO 6400+, $8000 price tag!

Unbelievable image quality. Solid, rugged build. Weather-proofing everywhere. Ultra-fast autofocus. Overall, the camera is heavier than a 5D (duh) but it actually balances out things when you have a heavy long lens. Dust reduction is a nice new feature.

Cannot select all focus points at once. No dedicated WB button and no ISO 6400+ (even though the D3 softens images at that ISO.) Two Compact Flash card slots would have been nice instead of CF and SD. Price is out of this world - for now.

Through August, Canon gives you a $100 repair voucher just for registering the camera + 20% off all repair parts.

You can't use this without being noticed. Make sure you get insurance when you travel with it. A body like this screams, "Steal me! I'm expensive."

Perfect

Strengths: autofocus, hard casing

Weakness: price

This camera is a perfect tool for professionals even though the price is very high. Image quality is beyond imagination. VERY fast autofocus. It`s woth all the 8k if you can afford it.

Amazing Camera!

Strengths: Full frame, Picture Quality, high dynamic range, build quality, battery life, large 3" LCD, live view, self cleaning sensor, 14 bits processor, dual CF and SD card support

Weakness: My unit arrived with small dust specs on the sensor, LCD has a light purple cast.

I did the jump from a Canon 20D to the 1Ds MkIII full frame and so far I'm really impressed. The high dynamic range on the picture is simply amazing. The camera is much heavier than the 20D but I actually find it more practical to use. I like the easy access to all major settings through. The dual CF and SD card support is very handy and even if I forget my main 4GB CF card I still have my backup 2GB SD ready in the camera. The battery life is also pretty amazing with close to 2000 JPEG shots on average. The build quality of the camera is also really good, this thing is built like a tank!

But this being said I wish Canon could do a better job at Quality control. My camera arrived with dust spec on the sensor (I could see it by shooting the sky at f22) and was most likely not assembled in a dust free environment. Also the LCD has an obvious purple cast which is annoying. I wish I had a back up camera to send this one back to Canon for service... That's the only reason why I won't give 5 stars.

Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III

THE GOOD: Very low noise, high quality images; 21.1 megapixels; live view shooting; pro-level build-quality and performance. THE BAD: High price tag; heavy body; no AF in live view mode. THE BOTTOM LINE: The 1Ds Mark III marks another high-end success for Canon, though youll need a lot of spare cash if you want to own this ground-breaking camera.
