Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Picture Quality, Picture Quality, Picture Quality, Sharp 8X optical lens. 5 MP. Compact flash type I & II. Well-designed and packed with features

Weakness: Would like a manual fucus ring.

Superb pictures. The cleanest and most true to life pictures in digital cameras costing less than $1000. Although others have mentioned the problems with focusing low light, this is not a problem once the cameras switch to the single focus mode. The single focus mode also increases the battery life.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: A great 5 megapixel camera that has a fantastic zoom lens. The additional telephoto adapter is well worth the expense.

Weakness: A little slow but not bad at all for a compact camera. The wide angle lens is heavy and large.

A really great camera with it's fixed zoom lens. I carry it in my SUV to take pictures at most any time. Easy to leave in the truck when I don't want to carry alot of gear. Used as a backup for my D1H and D100.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Ease of use based on previous CP5000 ownership. Improved lens and elimininaton of chromatic aberation.

Weakness: Left side buttons being exposed.

Zoom is teriffic. Better lens thean CP5000. Much better capabilities than 5000. Vewfinder is like SLR and much easier to use than LCD. Viewfinder info and clear and ability to see menu there is handy. Good feel and balance. Photos are excellent. Good autofocusing. Excellent macro photos.

Many years later

Strengths: Great quality of pictures

Weakness: some.....

I am still using it after 3.5 years later. I had this since 06/2003, it took great pictures.

The 2nd year it got lense jam once, had to send it back to fix. Turned out it should be a bad design of the power switch - it can easily turn on if you put it in the storage bag. A lot people had such discussions and had the same issues.

2 months ago (11/2006) the CCD died. Had to send it back to Nikon again. I had been forced to purchase an extra 5 year extended warranty (the saleman from Brooklyn NY - online store - cheated me) that somehow saved my money today - don't get me wrong, getting an extended warranty is always a plus - but just the way of that saleman sold it was not a pleasant experience. ( I now do pirchase extra warranty for all my digi cams.)

Nikon 5700

Strengths: Very Durable, Good flexibility, Takes greate pictures

Weakness: Slow, bad in low light. The automatic settings are not good for all situations.

I've bought this camera over a year ago. I also got 5 batteries, a hood, and an extra charger from PriceGrabber.com. This combination is greate for traveling. I used the camera in Iran, Brazil, Peru, China and all over America. It takes great pictures and has been a great travel companion. I've used in wet, sandy, and rain/windy situations and it has survived with minimal maintenance. I would suggest this camera to any using a camera for the first time. All aspects of the camera are available to manual adjustments. This camera forces you to learn how to use cameras. It shoots slow and is hard to use in low light situations. Other then those to problems it is an excellent picture tool. I'm replacing mine with the D50.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: None

Weakness: Extremely overcomplicated; settings that should require seconds require lengthy searching through myriad, uncomprehensible -- heiroglyphic -- codes. Resets itself, extremely difficult to focus.

Once you read this, you'll know that I don't work for anyone that makes money from Nikon. I've read several glowing reviews on this camera and I can't image how the reviewers could laud such a beast. I'll concede that mine may be a lemon, but, I've used cameras for more than 30 years and this is the very worstI've ever come across.
And, it is extremely difficult to use. The function controls are placed in four locations: buttons alongside the lens; buttons atop the camera; a top viewing screen and the main, backside viewing screen. The lens-mounted buttons are small and contain difficult to read symbols. Further, they only function under certain main-screen settings. The top-side buttons, placed alongside the shutter button, have multiple purposes that one must either memorize or research. The top viewing screen is thumbnail sized and often displays a dozen miniature -- generally unreadable -- symbols that are changed by one or more of the three other controls. The backside, main screen has more symbols than Microsoft Basic, with submenus under submenus. Its like paging through Genesis. Truth is, finding and changing settings is mind-boggling, time consuming and infuriating.
A back-screen sub-menu indicates that you can manually focus (using a top button control)but this is ineffective and only works for one shot (in my camera, anyway.) Also, in use, my 5700 sometimes refuses to focus. I mean, it locks up and refuses to move. You can't do anything. I've turned it on and off (rebooting) and it still won't move. Finally, through ten angry minutes of seaching the instruction book and menus, I've learned to reset the focus funtion and to have it begin focusing again. This has happened more than once.
Maddingly, my Coolpix 5700 has more than once changed its white balance in the middle of a sequence. I've seen three different primary color hues-- normal, red and blue -- in one continuous shoot of the same subject with the same light.
Its absolutely maddening to use in low light -- in fact, it won't focus, even on the single focus mode (once you find the Divinci code for that). And, low light, for this unit, is not what any decent photographer would call low. I'm talking of shooting with a bank of four, 300 watt 3200K incandescents ten feet away.
I've also carried the camera to shoot street scenes on cloudy New York City days where, again, it refused to accuratly focus. Also, in low light, you can't read the symbols in the top screen.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Good size and feel. Quality is superb. Zoom lens has made for some fabulous close ups and excellently framed shots.

Weakness: Low light photography. It takes toooooo long to focus. Even using ASA of 800 doesn't solve it. Once it does take them, they are good. I have taken to using a monopod.

I also have a Nikon 990 - the improvement is amazing. I am up over 4,000 photos on this camera in 5 months. My shots on the 5700 matched those on a pro's D1X at a friends wedding. The lens quality and ease of use is great. Sure the manual is complex, but so is photography. This camera allows adjustments for almost any situation. The low light capability needs improvement. For now I recognize that 98% of my shots have good light!

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Picture quality, lots of options, tele mode, strap.

Weakness: Battery life only 650mAh, starting memory is too small, sometimes there are noises while recording movie because microphone is nearby focus.

Shipped one day eariler than I expected it. Well packed. Camera generally is the best that I ever had. Pictures are great and clear. Best shot selector works very well. If you know photography trick you got excellent way to try it with this camera. But it's not big deal if you are novice. Very good manual will help you. Camera was shipped with all neccesary equipment.
Only two things that you should buy are...larger battery and larger memory. I paid 36$ for 256MB compact flash but now I don't care about space:D
I recommend it for professional and amateur photography!!!

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Great zoom lens. Lots of flexibility in using controls. It was hard to hold until I bought MB-E5700 battery pack that attaches to the base of the camera.

Weakness: The camera features take awhile to learn. Built in flash tends to produce pics on the lighter side. Flash pics are considerably better if you buy the SB-80DX speedlight.

I bought the Nikon 5700 because I wanted to use it for taking sports pictures and for other kinds of pictures around my home and for short road trips. It is very good for that. The camera features allow you to take pictures that reflect your tastes as far as saturation, focus, etc. I love the swiveling LCD screen, too. Because I use the battery pack, the camera is rather bulky for a digital when you are on an extensive trip. (By the way, some reviewers recommend the Powerex Maha NiMH batteries for the battery pack, but they would not work in the MB-E5700; I ended up getting some Sunpak 1800mAh batteries and they worked just great.) You might also consider the purchase of a smaller, inexpensive camera to be used solely for vacations; however, the Nikon 5700 is great for everything else. When you make prints from your digital shots, you will be amazed at the superb quality. Friends of mine who have seen my 8X10's are shocked when they find out that they were done with a digital because the prints are extremely sharp and have vibrant colors. You do need to buy a good software program for tweaking the pictures - cropping, etc., and you do need to get a high quality printer, but the results will astound you.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: 5 m.p.'s, feature rich, 8x zoom...well designed.

Weakness: none

This is an excellent camera. Buy far the best that I have used..and trust me I have had plenty, G2, 707, D30/40, just to name a few. The Nikon 5700 has a responsive small, compact metal body with every feature one could image. The image quality is exceptional. The color is glorious.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: picture quality.

Weakness: low light focusing, no lens thread, no manual focusing ring, No rear shutter flash, too small, too light (hard to hold it steady).

There are weaknesses, but this is the best digital camera you can get at this price.
I bought this camera for its lens.
Who cares what the other cameras can do? If I can have this Nikon ED lens, I am willing to put off with the weaknesses.
The picture quality from this camera is equal to professional camera (unless you are using a thousand dollar lens).
Of course, you will miss some fast-shooting opportunities because of its weaknesses. But, it will do the job most of the time.

I have a Nikon speedlight SB-28DX, because I take a lot of indoor shots. It seems to work well.

You can screw on UV filter if you'd like. Search the web, there is a store that makes the adopter for lens thread.

I spent $100.00 at RadioShack. And I made myself an external battery pack. I have 9 D size batteries wired up to power my camera and speedlight. You may buy a similar product at Quantum Instrument for $550.00.

I also spent $7.00 and came up with an AA size battery pack which I attach it on the strap. I am not willing to shell out $130.00 for Nikon's battery pack. Between the internal and AA batteries, I get about 3-4 hours of working time.

I dug into my electro-trash bin and found a SONY 8.4v AC adopter. I turned that into a DC power source.

What I'm trying to prove is that I am a very thrifty & creative person. I can tell you that cookpix 5700 has some weaknesses, but it will give you the best picture quality, which is what matters the most.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Metal body,Superb picture quality,SLR feel,ETC,ETC.ETC.

Weakness: Would like a manual fucus ring.

I own three Nikon SLR cameras, but I doubt if I'll ever use them again. The 5700 has everything I'll ever need in a camera. It's certainly a blessing not to have to wait for film to come back from the processing lab. If you can only afford one camera, this is the one to buy. It's not cheap, but it's all Nikon quality and should last a lifetime.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Everything

Weakness: No Filter ability

I've owned the Sony 707, Dimage 7, Olympus C2500 & C2100UZ and this Nikon 5700 blows them away. It is stunning and the picture quality is surpassed by none. I thought the Sony 707 would be my last camera, but the Nikon 5700 took things to a new level, Thanks Nikon!

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Photo quality, ease of use in automatic mode, zoom lens, functionality almost limitless.

Weakness: Macro capability is difficult to perfect with this camera. esp. focus (lot of luck involved). Filters from Nikon slow in coming. Multifuntion buttons are easy to change. Slow write speed to CF.

I have mixed feelings about this camera. Overall, I really like the ease of using it. I have taken some outstanding photos with it, but I personally feel that something is lacking in the overall quality of the output. It travels well, is very light. I carry an extra battery, which takes care of my needs (400 - 600 photos). Color rendition is good. I'm looking into other cameras now which are more like 35 mm. The 5700 has a narrow range when it comes to f-stop. When using the zoom, you have to use a tripod. It's extremely sensitive to movement. Nikon has recently released a 67 mm filter adapter, but these are backordered everywhere. Don't know what the problem is, as it is a piece of molded plastic.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Picture and Nikon Quality. Good Ergonomics.

Weakness: Eats batteries like I eat Cheesesteaks (and I love cheesesteaks). Not a "snapshot" camera

I bought my camera 2 months ago for my work as a police officer. I've used this camera for macro work for fingerprints and crime scene photos. It has worked admirably and never has let me down, and I have taken over 2000 pictures. I'm not a professional photographer and feel that my appraisal is geared toward the average guy who is looking for semi-pro product.
I recently took the camera on a 10 day trip to Disney, Universal, and Seaworld which I believe tested how the average person would use this camera. I brought 2 512 meg cards, a 256 meg card, and the 8 meg that came with the camera. I also bought 5 batteries online to bring along.

1. The camera has a voracious appetite for batteries and I advise buying a few extra.

2. I bought a lens filter set and found it was not needed as the Nikon exposure and white balance settings seemed to work very well.

3. The camera is not the first choice for quick snapshots and I had to anticipate fast action shots like jumping dolphins ect. Use the infinity focus setting or you will miss the shot. The multiple shot setting worked well for this, but again you have to setup the camera before hand. The camera does have several macros and once you set these up it only takes a few seconds to change.

4. An external flash is a must.

5. I received my Nikon rebate check yesterday, it only took 4 weeks.

6. I printed several pictures with a hp k60 all in one and printed them at 8.5x11 inches. They look fantastic with perfect detail and no pixelization.

7. video mode is not the best as you can only shoot 1 minute at a time, then have to wait for the camera to finish writing to the card. Would be nice if the camera would continue to write as long as the card had room. I realize the camera is a still camera first and a video camera 2nd, but....

8. Overall an excellent product

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Great picture quality.

Weakness: lcd view finder, in low lighting it is impossible to see anything through the view finder, only aim and shoot hope that you shot the area you want it to shoot.

I been loyal Nikon user for last 20 years, all my 35mm camera equipments are Nikon, and never have been disappointed. being Nikon user I chose prosumer coolpix 5700. I haven't used digital camera much to say if any other digital camera is better, but I could say something about the controls and usage.
My biggest problem is that it's slow and confused auto focus. Often, it would just try to focus back and forth and never focus on the subject. I wish it had manual focus.
My second biggest problem is that it has a LCD view finder that is totally useless in low light. View finder is totally dark (as if cap is on) while your naked eye still could see, so you just point the camera and shoot. it's unlike Nikon to have such design.
Third problem is that too many feature for each button. many of the picture I took in program mode doesn't seem have correct lighting, so I use manual or aperture/shutter priority, to do this couple of buttons need to set and it takes time (especialy when you are new to the camera).
The camera grip is nice, but small for the bigger hands.
I have to say picture quality is excellent. when I take pictures I curse the camera but when I review the pictures for it's quality I am very satisfied, that is the pictures that I was able to set correctly.
My recommandation is that if you like taking indoor low lighting and moving objects I would not recommanded, but if you are taking outdoor pictures with plenty of light than it takes awsome pictures.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Good value f/the price, especially now that the 8700 & D-70 has come out. Nikon optics are top notch. Very user programable(but you must read the extensive owner's manual). Amazing image quality.

Weakness: Dim light auto focus is almost impossible. Very bad design, not to have incorporated a dim-light-focus-aid-light. Camera start up & exposure are good but should be closer to instantaneous.

I am a serious photographer. I own many cameras, including Nikon film SLR's. This is my third digicam (& second Nikon digicam). The 5700 is a great prosumer digicam. It delivers outstanding image quality & is fairly intuitive once you get used to it. Price is a bargin @ under $500. You get the solid build quality of Nikon, along w/their razor sharp lens. 8X zoom is a nice feature but you can not use it unless you are in very bright lighting. Flash, as w/many prosumer digicams, is weak. This camera tends to burn up batteries @ a very significant rate. Make sure you have @ least one back-up; more is better.

Weaknesses are: auto-focus in low light is awful, eats batteries @ an alarming rate, not as quick to start up, record, focus as my brother's Nikon D-70 (A Great Camera, @ ~3 times more $$'s.)

A good balance between cost & function. I'm a little disappointed Nikon didn't address the focusing issue. You will see constant complaints about that since it is the over riding weakness of this camera.

Jury is still out on the Electronic View Finder. I don't care f/it but it is handy to review your digipix that way (esp. in daylight). I think I still prefer an optical viewfinder. The EVF may be one reason the batteries don't last.

One last thing: Wish it had 28mm wide angle standard. Having to buy an auxillary lens to get below 35mm is a rip.

Summary: Great camera (& optics) f/the price. Will deliver outstanding detail if you learn how to live w/it's weaknesses. Great value @ today's price. (05/05/2004)

I've lived w/this digicam f/8 months. My iniital impressions are still valid: Great build quality, sharp lens, & lots of shooting options. MAJOR probles in daily use are (still): Very slow to focus (Really *can't* focus in dim light), burns up batteries way too quickly, wide angle isn't wide enough, telephono only useable in very bright light, flash is exceptionally weak & EVF isn't nearly as clear/sharp as any SLR &/or viewfinder digicam. Even w/all the negatives above, this is a great digicam. Just which Nikon had addressed the problems listed above. I'd recommend you go after a Nikon 5200 or 5400 before this model. The D-70 would be an even better choice if you are a serious photographer..........

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Great 8x zoom, terrific picture quality, quick adjustment buttons on left side are a big PLUS, o macro is and added PLUS

Weakness: A little slow on focusing, but can be adjusted through different modes. Original battery life is low.

As and old SLR user wanting to go digital and yrs of reading reviews and different digital camera specs, I decided on the Nikon 5700. If you want just a point and shoot camera buy a cheaper one. If you like the options of a fully adjustable digital camera (ie old SLR user) you can't go wrong for the price and Nikon runs rebates TOO ++. To beat this camera I think you would have to go to digital SLR for and added $800-1000 or more, but then your getting into professional price range. Lens and filters are available along with other options. You can buy them all separate, or as a Kit like I did. As a kit I got 2x telephoto (check it out with the 5700 8x zoom and 4x digital zoom), wide angle, and macro lens with adapters(a MUST). Also tripods, ac/dc quick charger, 128 mb CFs (Nikon supplies a 16-32 CF), high speed compact flash reader/writer, and 800Mah battery (better then the 600-680 supplied from Nikon). Look for 800mah or higher battery.

Lens and adapters can be confusing. Don't forget to set up lens type in the camera's menu. Normal, wide adapter, or telephoto.

I like the Electronic viewfinder with the Select button for quick change between viewfinder or monitor. ++

And for the computer buff, the software NikonView5 and ArcSoft are supplied. I put my compact flash into the reader and NikonView5 pops right up for easy download. I love it.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Incredible flexibility and user control. Electronic viewfinder works as SLR...sharpness is what I've waited for.

Weakness: On-Off switch is too sensitive. I have turned camera off a number of times accidentally.

I stopped bying 35mm ten years ago, waiting for something like the 5700. I'm very happy that I waited, because it's everything I wanted and more.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: My review is one star but no matter how many times I tried to submit the review it would only take four stars. So if you see anything but 1(one) star to the right it is not correct!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Weakness: The autofocusing is terrible in normal/low inside room light conditions.

This is a great camera except for one major problem that makes it almost unusable for normal inside shooting conditions. The autofocus will take forever and when it does finally let you take a shot the picture is often out of focus. I wish I had read some of the reader reviews in this magazine before I bought the camera because it would have saved me from a bad purchase. I have also uncovered the comments in the PC World review that mentions the problem. If you plan on doing any inside shooting or low light you can forget about this camera. Good Luck!

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: This camera is a highly versitale camera that is designed for an experienced amature or professional. The amount of features allows you to get incredibly detailed pictures.

Weakness: Becayuse of the many features it takes quite a while to figure out all the things that you can do with this camera. A bit quirkish with downloads and the owners manual is OK but not detailed enough.

I have had this camera about 4 days now and I have just begun to scratch the surface of what this camera can do. I am taking very sharp clear images of everything I can think of especially the shots I have had troubles with my other digital cameras. I am impressed by this camera's ability to make me a better photographer as it compensates for many of my mistakes.

Strengths: great picture quality and zoom

Weakness: slow to focus, esp. in low light conditions

I do not have as much of a problem with the camera as I do with the promised rebate from Nikon. I purchased the camera from the internet, using my credit card. With the reciept the vender sent to me, I send everything Nikon asked for to the rebate address. they returned the rebate request. stating the reciept would not due, (what the ?>+**LL?) it was the only reciept I had. So I resent it the second time with a note elplaining the situation. again they sent it back. So let you be Warned their rebate policy sucks. I wonder how many others have lost their 100 dollar rebate this way. Seemed like a rebate scam to me. Good Luck On your Rebate!!!!!!

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: 8X zoom(have you seen many digital cameras with 8x optical?), incredible colors, excellent pictures in Auto mode, 300dpi, crystal clear detail, long battery life.

Weakness: Low light focusing problems.

Deffinitely the best camera in 5MegaPix class. I tried 2-3 cameras before stopping on it. Best thing I have ever owned. I just keep taking pictures and printing. Took it on my vacation, never let me down. Can't find enough words to praise it. Strongly recommend this piece of technology. If it is for so long in Top 100, there is no more need of comments.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Optical zoom to 8x is very good. The feel of the camera is more like a film camera. Eyepiece shows the actual frame regardless of zoom. Lens optics are very good. Uses compact flash.

Weakness: Manual focus control not very good, battery life is short, non-standard thread size on lens prevents use of filters.

The first 5700 I purchased had a problem with some always on pixels - commonly called "Hot Pixels". The camera store replaced the camera no problem. The second 5700 also had "hot pixels"!!! This time they called Nikon. The problem can be fixed by a two minute procedure which involves re-mapping the pixel. The problem is, they want you to send in the camera to Nikon rather than make the software available -- they say it's "special" software -- not very user friendly. Apart from this, the camera has been good.

Strengths: High megapixel great quality pictures and awsome zoom.

Weakness: Needs a backup battery. The battery only gives like 1 hour of real useage time. And 32mb card nikon gives you is not enough.

I love this camera the wide angle lens i got for this was great. I went mountain climbing in the rockies 2 weeks ago and the pictures I took were of spectacular quality and do to the lens I was able to take much more scenic pictures. Thanks Nikon

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Outstanding image quality, ability to adjust just about any setting you want to, 8X Nikor FD zoom lens (very nice), good software. Inherent Nikon quality.

Weakness: Awkward filter mount due to lens pop out and extension when zooming. 16MB CF is just "starter", I bought a Gig CF for 400 images at highest JPEG.

I wanted the best, and feel I got it. This Nikon kicks butt with its 5 zillion pixels - I can't tell it is digital on 8x10 prints! If you are a little bit tech'y, and want something that does what you want it to, while delivering great results, get this 5700!

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Sharp 8X lens. 5 MP. Great macro capabilities. Strong flash. Hot shoe. Compact flash type I & II. 3 JPEG modes, TIFF, & RAW format. 60 sec. movie. Noise reduction. ASA 100-800. Pro features.

Weakness: Poor AF in low light situations. No manual focus ring. Need at least a 128MB card. Card comes with 16MB (What a joke)

Other than the problems with the auto focusing in low light conditions. This is an excellent camera. Researched the other 5 MP cameras, and decided on this one. It can be a point and shoot or manual. Photos on auto are almost perfect. True to life colors with excellent exposure. Flash is pretty strong but you need to use red-eye reduction for people. I've printed portraits on my 6 color Epson 870 on glossy photo paper and the prints come out stunning. You can't tell them apart from a professional color lab print. Price is high but well worth it. You can find it for under $1000.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Just what you can from Nikon. The best. I'm long time user of Nikon 6006. I did a lot of shopping before I decided that I will go with 5700. I think that I made very good decission. Picture quality is

Weakness: Battery could be more stonger. If you will use LCD and aconstant auto focus it will eat up battery quick. So additional battery pack recommended.

Great camera, if you use right settings is not as bad as others say about focus
in low light. Just like with every other digital toys, must practice and get use to it.
My only complain is short battery life.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Awesome Pictures, lots of control, good battery life, and excellent zoom.

Weakness: proprietary usb interface requires special cable; usb 1.1 interface; lens adapter makes camera look bulky.

Pictures have great color and clarity. Tilting LCD screen allows you to shoot picture with a great deal of flexibility. In crowds you can hold it above your head and tilt screen down. The LCD resolution is good, and the zoom features are nice. Lots of flexibility in setup all the way to dummying down for simple point and shoot.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: 5MP images, excellent quality 8x telephoto lens/images, great customized conrols, flash hotshoe

Weakness: Not for sports, despite 8x lens. Camera often mis-focuses on background, continuous shooting is impossible w/o large cache (no continuous viewfinder image to track moving subjects with), slow focusing

A great camera for portraits, stills, etc. It is not ideal for sports at all. It tends to focus beyond what takes up 70% of the frame in the foreground. The continuous shooting settings yield nice images, but require telepathic abilities to determine (without actually seeing) where a moving subject, aka a soccer or football player, is running.
I would use this camera and its excellent 5-megapixel images and 8x zoom lens for lesser objectives than sports. Great Nikon camera, just not in sports arena. Also slow to lock focus on most subjects; in sports, candid photography, that spells missed photos galore. Not true to the Nikon name.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Numerous settings allow great pictures in almost any condition. Lens quality is number one. 8X optical combined with 4X digital zoom results in 32X total zoom!!

Weakness: Numerous settings. It takes some time to learn all settings and how to apply them.

This is my first digital camera. I choose the Nikon over the Minolta Hi7 due to price, at the time. The camera is complicated and takes some time to learn how to properly use all of the settings. The picture quality is outstanding. However, it does have a problem adjusting the focus in low light conditions. I have found that it is easier to have the camrea on single, rather than continous, autofocus. This cuts down on the time it takes to focus the picture. In an outdoor setting, it works flawlessly. The camera is capible of upto 3.5 frames per second for pictures and 30 fps for movies. Also the macro setting allows focusing up to 1.2 inches.

I would buy this camera again and look forward to buying additional lenses for it.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Excellent picture quality. Long battery life. Great lens! It's a Nikon - quality is there. Lots of accessories available.

Weakness: Built-in flash is quite limited as on most digitals - get the DX50 Speedlight if you're going to do alot of flash. Telephoto adapter doesn't zoom.

This is the best quality "pro-sumer" camera on the market. The lens is an ED, which is Nikon's best and the zoom range is phenomenal! The 5700 is not quite as versatile as a digital SLR, but the pictures taken are just as good as my D100 shots. Telephoto is limited, as it can't zoom. Haven't tried the wide angle adapter. Get an extra battery pack and the speedlight.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Color sensor is superior. 8x lense is extremely useful whil allowing for amazing macro pictures. Camera auto setting takes a great picture almost all the time. This is a great camera at an amazing $

Weakness: New 8mb 8700 out. That is why I only gave it 4/5 stars. I have been able two work around all the complaints I read in other reviews by reading the manual. Took 25 minutes to finish.

I bought mine from ButterFly Photo. My experience was great. The camera has meet/exceeded all my expectation. I've read reviews on my many camera while researching what to buy for the last year and a half.
Also bought a Lex Mar 512mb CF card. Together I have the ultimate picture taking machine.
Camera can be used in automatic mode or your can manually change any setting yourself. Camera menus are intiutive. This Nikon body seems very sturdy.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Professional in capabilities, workmanship, and functionality.

Weakness: The cost and accessability of accessories.

I purchased this camera, and accessories, after selling two Nikon F3HP bodies, five top-quality lenses, and a plethora of Nikon accessories. It was my intent to replace the time-consuming picture taking process of the SLR with a professional grade digital camera. My hopes were to purchase a camera that would allow me to continue to shoot pictures of the highest quality and yet reduce the volume of equipment necessary to perform the task.

I'm pleased to say that I've been able to continue taking pictures that are of professional quality, and have found a digital camera quite easily mastered.

I recommend the Nikon Coolpix 5700 without reservation.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Lightweight; fairly intuitive controls; fast response

Weakness: Expensive; no way to reasonably attach a lens filter

I have only had my 5700 for about 2 weeks but I am already thrilled with it. This camera was an upgrade from an Epson 850Z. Despite reading comments about complexities of this camera, I was taking pictures 5 minutes after I put the battery in (I have already been using a digital camera for a couple of years, but nothing like this one). Even with the new bells and whistles, I found the controls to be intuitive and the displays logical and informative. The speed of start up, zoom and auto-focus is outstanding. The 2 most noticable characteristics of this camera are the speed at which the camera recovers between pictures and the intelligent light and color balancing. I have taken quite a few test shots outdoors/indoors and bright/low light. This camera has delivered beautiful pictures in all of these conditions. One other thing: the fold out LCD is a great idea. The size is a little small, but it is clear and accurate. I can't say enough good things about this camera.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Excellent Pictures - both indoors and out

Weakness: Auto focus seems to have some difficulty in very low light conditions (not bad though).

I am not a camera expert - just a moderately intelligent average Joe - who dabbles in amatuer photography (home use). I found this camera to be initially intimidating (some negative reviews and massive operators manual) but once I committed to trying and using it - I was taking great pictures in the first 5 minutes! Not difficult at all unless you are an idiot with absolutely no patience.

Camera works great - I am learning more each time I use it - which is fun! Experimenting is great - am absolutely sold on the quality of the camera and the excellent pictures it produces. Have had it 5 days and am completely competent with use in Auto - and relatively competent with all other uses and settings. Not good for a point and shoot simpleton (will work as a point and shoot also) - but if you like quality, precision and features, this is a great camera.

I'd rather spend $660 on a semi-pro, great camera I can grow with than $400 on a mediocre point and shoot camera that is set up for 10 year olds.

The included software was easy to use and is excellent as well. A great camera at a great price nowadays (I paid under $700 shipped to my door).

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Good Value

Weakness: Too much noise for 5 mpx camera

This is my first digital camera. When i first buy this camera, I thought Nikon produce the best lens for camera product. Yes it is... after playing with this camera about a week i can realy appreciate how the menu navigation designed. it's a semi professional camera but the pirce is afordable.. the only thing I don't like is the image quality especialy in low light condition. (without flash) noise level is high.. some how take black and white picture looks rough detail but somehow artistic... if you want to get into serious photography better be jump to D100.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: good color balance, hi resolution

Weakness: Will not focus in low light, Electronic viewfinder slow to refresh. Non-userfriendly interface, bad button placement.

I bought this camera based in part on the other reviews on this site. I am back to warn you about the Nikon Coolpix 5700. It is not so cool.
The Electronic viewfinder is slow and it blurs if you move the camera, and the resolution of the EVF is low. The image in the viewfinder is bad. To make it worse the lcd screen on the back of the camera is too small for a camera of this cost.
This camera has an annoying little habit. It constantly refocuses itself. It can sit on a table and as people walk by it makes little noises as it refocuses. This can’t be good for the battery life. It’s a good thing you can turn this features off.
The interface is difficult to navigate, the readout on top is too small, and the button placement is bad.
The battery is not AA, it’s a proprietary/expensive camera battery.
But the worst thing about this camera is the focus. The Super Slow autofocus makes this camera unusable. Manual focus is slow to respond (it’s not really manual, but fly by wire) and it is choppy. The autofocus only works in bright light, and on subjects with a lot of contrast. The autofocus does not work in room light, not to mention low light.
I sent this turkey back and I have ordered an Olympus E-20 like I should have in the first place. I don’t know what I was thinking, I also owned an Olympus C2500L and loved it. The Olympus E-20 uses regular batteries and is a real SLR for about $200 more than the Nikon.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: Flexibility, seems to do just about everything. 35-200mm zoom lens.

Weakness: Battery life. Low-light focus. non-standard filter mount.

I bought this camera for it's EVF and I'm happy with it. The lithium battery lasts about 20-30 shots, or about half a day on vacation, so carrying a spare is a must. Found that the best way to deal with the autofocus was to set it to only focus once per shutter-release push. That helped alot. Macro mode works very well, which was an unexpected bonus. Trick with focus seems to be to activate focus confirmation to see what it is doing. Speed of image taking is a common problem to all digital cameras and this one is no exception though there are 4 modes (low speed multi capture, high speed multi capture, 16 image capture and fast storage mode) to get around it.

Bought this camera to replace a Kodak DC260 that I hated and a Canon A1 that I loved for 20 years. I feel I got what I wanted.

Strengths: Nikon Quality, this is a well made product. User selected custom setting, including super-sharp black and white fotos!

Weakness: Cannot accept filters, Manual focus is nearly impossible

Great camera if you have the time to spend days studying the manual. In the manual you will discover methods to overcome almost all shortcomings, but geeez what a learning curve!

Strengths: excellent optics, LCD design, camera controls, long optical zoom, perfect macro shots

Weakness: auto-focus in low light situation

This camera is the top choice on the market right now, because given the combination of price-performance-quality-size, nothing really come close. Got to love that 8X optical zoom.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 5 Megapixel Compact Camera - 8.90...

Strengths: You have to find out

Weakness: 1. Put a bigger flash card with it. 2. The batteries stink. They last about 90 mins which isn't that bad. Should put AA

The Coolpix 5700 is my 5th digital camera (3rd Nikon) - and no previous camera compares. The 8:1 zoom alone is worth the price of admission (it's what I'd been waiting for.)

Until this camera I had a firm rule of no camera without an optical viewfinder. I had seen too many digital camera users stuck in very bright or very low light, unable to use their cameras. I warily decided to make an exception based on the fact that in addition to other compelling features of this camera - e.g., 8:1 zoom, 5 megapixels - I got through-the lens-viewing, albeit electronic. Well, this electronic viewfinder is so good that in my opinion this camera really is an SLR. In fact, I don't know why they can't call it that. It does have viewing through the lens, whether there's a flip-up mirror or not. I would imagine terminology will eventually change to allow such cameras to be called "Electronic SLRs."

I disagree with other reviews I've read that talk about a steep learning curve. I found learning this camera rapid and intuitive. Especially if you've used any of the previous Coolpix models, you'll find everything just where you would expect it to be, but more refined and elegant than in previous models. It is very easy to navigate the menus and to set up. And of course in the default full-auto mode it works just like any point-and-shoot. There's no reason anyone can't pick up this camera and use it right out of the box.

A reason why I haven't bought any previous high-end digital SLR was a concern about size and weight. I had to have a camera I could carry around my neck for bicycle touring. Pictures I'd seen of the Coolpix 5700 made it look rather large and heavy. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's virtually the same size and weight as my previous Coolpix 995 - like a compact 35mm camera. It also is the easiest to grip and manipulate of any camera I've owned - it seems to cling to your hand. I love the easy shutter release button. A complaint about previous Coolpix's was that for me pressing the overly stiff and "clicky" shutter release button would cause the camera to move. No so with the 5700.

I love the fact that there is a large, REAL lens cap, cleverly designed so that it simply moves out with the zoom if you forget to take the cap off before power-up. I also like the real hot flash shoe. This camera's a winner - the best of any I've had.
