sx1is

Strengths: great pictures, amazing video, awesome zoom, the screen

Weakness: battery life, auto focusing, feels small

love the camera, i've had it for about 2 months and i plan on bringing it on spring break, only hope the batteries don't run out. you can get 2-3 hours of use out of 1 set of rechargeable, so it's always good to keep a spare. the manual is a must or else you will get completely lost. HD video great and also great iso range with decent noise even at iso 1600

SX1 is good for semi-pro and standard use

Strengths: HD Video - RAW stills in a compact form, ease of use, great lens, pretty good IS.

Weakness: Does not make pro type images at ISO 200 or greater.

I have shot tens of 1000s of stills and video over 40 years, in all formats of film and video as well as digital for the past 8 years, I spent 30 years in broadcast TV.

Getting my mind wrapped around shooting with this type of camera form has been the biggest hurdle for me. I had to put my SLR and video cameras away for the past 8 months so that I could get my head and body retrained to use this camera. It's different, you can't just reach out and rack focus or change fstops or shutter speed like an SLR so I decided to retrain my brain to actually use this camera form as instinctively as I used an SLR.

The camera itself takes very good pictures for the invested price and really offers advantages of smaller form, lighter weight, massive storage capabilities as well as RAW and HD video.

In real life use, as a wildlife photographer, I feel a little funny standing right next to other wildlife photographers with D7s and huge lenses getting almost identical images with this really small camera. Living in South Florida I get a lot of experience showing off my images in those circles. OH yea, makes great HDRi too.

Here is a photoshow with combined stills and video. Obviously this isn't full HD.

Canon PowerShot SX1 IS Review

Tuned for both stills and video, the Canon PowerShot SX1 continues a long line of Canon long-zoom digital cameras, but with a new twist: it uses a 10-megapxiel CMOS sensor instead of a CCD. Though this doesn't seem to improve the Canon SX1's image quality, it does enable both "Full HD" 1080p video capture and a still-image framerate of up to 4 frames per second. Its 20x zoom lens has a very...

Canon SX1 IS

The Canon PowerShot SX1 IS is a successor to 2007’s PowerShot S5IS. This mid-level compact digital camera differs from its predecessor by improving several of the core features relating to image quality and performance. The SX1 IS is the first PowerShot to feature a 10 megapixel Canon CMOS sensor, which allows the camera to offer full resolution continuous shooting at 4fps, as well as 1080p...

DCRP Review: Nikon Coolpix S630

The Canon PowerShot SX1 isn't just a super zoom digital camera -- it's also a video camera capable of recording Full HD video. In the past, hybrid cameras have been just so-so, but the PowerShot SX1 takes good quality stills and very nice HD movies. Add in a rotating LCD, manual controls, snappy performance, and lots of point-and-shoot features, and you end up with a hybrid camera that's done the...

Canon PowerShot SX1 IS

THE GOOD: Relatively fast; good HD video; raw file support. THE BAD: Big; quirky interface; some image artifacts. THE BOTTOM LINE: A top megazoom option, the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS offers a 20x zoom lens and HD video, which you cant get in a similarly priced dSLR, and delivers more features and slightly better performance and photo quality than the cheaper SX10 IS.

Camera Labs – Canon PowerShot SX1 IS review

Canon's PowerShot SX1 IS is arguably one of the most technologically successful hybrid cameras to date, offering both 10 Megapixel stills and Full HD 1080p video recording in a compact body with a 20x zoom, fully articulated screen, fast continuous shooting, flash hotshoe and HDMI port. <p>There's really very little this camera doesn't offer apart from RAW recording. If you're in the market for a...
