Nikon Coolpix 5900 5.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Great high resolution - user interface is easy - nice low light images

Weakness: none

This camera takes great pictures. I have been a cannon person for a long time and took a chance on this. I've been very happy so far with the first 1000 photos I have taken. I would highly sugget this camrea for any user who is looking to get into the digital market with a camera that has high mega-pixles

My thoughts are that a separate battery charger is a plus. With a second battery you don't need to wait to recharge, which by the way is only two hours.

Nikon Coolpix 5900 5.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: High tech. Small size. Great Pictures. Strong battery.

Weakness: I'd like an optical zoom greater than 3x but that might make the camera larger than the 5900.

I replaced an 2+ year old Coolpix 4300 with this camera and was stunned in the advances in digital camera world. I was looking at the Coolpix S1 for the form factor but after using the Coolpix 5900 I am completely happy. You can use the camera right out the box on Auto mode, but take the time to read the manual and play with the camera and you will be rewareded with great pictures under more difficult conditions. The camera is ready to take pictures right after you turn it on and the 2" screen makes it easy to see the finished photo. The cropping feature built into the camera was very helpful. I love this camera and with the recent drop in the list price, from $349 to $299, it is a great buy. I got mine via this site from buydig.com. I am one happy camper!

Nikon Coolpix 5900 5.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: More features than you will know what to do with. Great quality pictures. Small, but not too small.

Weakness: The user interface can take a little time to get used to, but not long.

This is a great little camera. First of all, the pictures are very good. I'm not a professional photographer by any means, but I know when something looks good, and the pictures taken with this camera look VERY good. The feature set for this camera is long, and it takes a while to get used to having so many options. There is a mode for just about every situation you can think of. It is definitely worth your time to sit down and read the manual, which is something I hardly ever do. The camera also has a nice feel to it. The aluminum casing gives it a very sturdy feel that is not at all cheap-feeling. It is compact, but not so small that it is hard to hold. It also has a nice bright 2 inch screen. The best part is the price, you pay a very reasonable price for such a large feature set. The media is also quite affordable when compared to other compact cameras that use xD picture cards. I spend $25 for a 256MB SD card for this camera, which gives me 90 shots on the highest quality. I would definitely recommend this camera.

Nikon Coolpix 5900 5.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Small size, light weight, lots of pixels, easy to use and lots of versatility

Weakness: A stronger flash would be helpful

Charge the battery and you are ready to shoot. Auto shoot is point and shoot at its best, but there is a lot more. The aluminum body keeps the weight down but has a nice solid feeling. The 2" LCD is wonderful. Controls are well positioned and easy to use. Punch one button and you are in play back mode. Push another and you are in delete mode. It definitely pays to spend the time to read the 154 page manual to learn about the help that is available with a broad variety of special situtations. I particularly like the Museum Assist that turns off the flash and automatically selects your best speed/exposure combination. The ability to mark selected images for transfer to your computer using the transfer button, is another a great feature. This is a great camera and a big step up from my Canon Powershot S330.

Nikon Coolpix 5900 5.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: compact, big LCD, long battery life

Weakness: no auto-rotate in playback mode for vertical pictures

I've studied for a long time to find a replacement for my 1-year-old canon S45. I choose this one because of its small size, long battery life and the 2" LCD, which make taking and reviewing photos much easier. I was kind of worrying about the compact design may result in limited functions and settings, but I was wrong. The camera gives a lot of freedom for you to adjust the parameters or you can choose from a bunch of pre-stored scene modes, both are great. The menus are easy to navigate, too. The macro mode is fantastic. I've tried to take close picture of some flowers, they were very clear and vivid. I am quite satisfied with the quality of the photos and the price. It's only about $250 now. Highly recommended.

Nikon Coolpix 5900 5.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Quality pictures, long life battery, and compact size.

Weakness: Can’t think of any; well maybe a shade for the monitor when shooting in the sun.

It was a choice between the 7900 and this one. Since I will not be blowing up any pictures, I settled for the 5900. With the image size set at maximum, 2592 x 1944, and quality set at fine I can get 100 pictures, the normal setting will give 196 pictures; all this on a 256MB SD card. I bought two cards for $15 each with rebate. With two cards, one can get damaged or lost and you still have the other one.

It takes two hours to charge a fully depleted battery. A new Nikon battery costs $30; an after market is $12 to $15. It is nice to have a separate charger, that way you can be charging one battery and still use the camera. Depending on how much you use the menus and flash you can get up to 272 shots on one charge; a battery is good for approximately 500 charges.

Read the book first then take it and the camera out and start shooting. It is too hard to learn everything all at once. I found that shooting a few pictures and then putting them in the computer helps to show what I did wrong and what I did right.

With practice you can shoot with the best of them.

Nikon Coolpix 5900 review

Strengths: D-Lighting, BSS, some useful scene modes, good movie mode, and good value.

Weakness: Does not auto rotate portrait pictures. Shot to shot time a little longer with flash.

I have compared Sony DSC-W5 and Canon PowerShot SD400 before I settled on this one. In my opinion, CP5900 has better value than the other two, if you don't care about some manual controls like shutter speed.

Some unique features of this camera like D-lighting and Best Shot Selector (BSS) are very useful. D-lighting helps lighting up shaded part of a picture. Although you can achieve the same result with some post processing software like Photoshop but I found D-lighting very easy to use and the result is great. I also like BSS a lot. It is especially useful when taking indoor pictures without flash to preserve the nature lighting.

There are plenty of scene modes and I found some of them very useful, like "Indoor/Party", "Museum", and "Panorama". Of course, you will find yourself never get the chance to use some of the scene modes but it doesn't hurt if they are there.

Some reviews has reported focusing problem during low light situation however I haven't experienced any problem like that with my camera. Probably I never take pictures in a pub or disco club.

Nikon Coolpix 5900 5.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Very small(fits is the palm of your hand), exceptional quality control, loads of different function(user friendly), high quality lens and workmenship, extraordinary photos, the 2 inch lcd is great.

Weakness: None, for a point and shoot, or much more manual control, I havent found any weakness.

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

Nikon Coolpix 5900 5.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Lovely appearance, easy to use and high quality pictures. The built-in flash is really convenient and strong.

Weakness: For the LCD has no glass to cover it, I am afraid that it is so fragile that may be easily destroyed.

SD card is affordable – you can get a 256MB card at less than $15. The LCD is large and bright. The rechargeable battery is easy to use, and the input AV of the charger is 110-240v which can be used abroad. It has many modes for choosing – you can get brilliant pictures. In the movie mode, the sound and video quality is satisfactory. I do love this camera.

Nikon Coolpix 5900 5.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Compact, easy to hold, user-friendly, great pictures

Weakness: Battery must be removed to recharge

This is my first digital camera which I purchased after much research. It takes great pictures and has so many bells and whistles. It will take some time to learn all of them and figure them out. The manual is helpful, but could be a bit more explicit. Nevertheless, the layout of the camera is very user-friendly and it is pretty simple to figure out at least the basics on your own. The video/audio is much better quality than I expected. I bought a 1gb card which holds over 700 pictures which will be great for traveling when I do not have access to a computer to download the pictures.

Nikon Coolpix 5900 5.1 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Small size, light weight, good battery life, great pictures

Weakness: None

The camera has a sturdy and light aluminum body, and only slightly less compact than Canon Powershot SD series cameras. The user interface is easy to navigate. It has Nikkor ED optics, which provide very nice and crisp photos with little noise. Also of note is the 2" LCD with a stunningly high refresh rate.

I'm loving this camera

Strengths: good pics, easy to use, a lot of options

Weakness: none

I have been using this camera for 2 weeks. I found that it is a pretty good one in terms of images it produces, options we can use, etc. I have not yet found any weaknesses. In conclusion, I think it is a pretty good camera at a pretty low price.

scott from minocqua

Strengths: agree with what others say. Great small camera.

Weakness: the wideangle / telephone movement is too rapid. Zooming in and out too quickly. One must press controls just slightly and lens jumps.

Great camera, love the 2" LDC, battery life great. Only weakness mentioned above. This is my second Nikon, the 4100 was first, this is exceptional. Would have tried 4800 for longer zoom but none available to handle.

Coolpix 5900 Review

Strengths: Large screen SD capability with built in memory Nice pictures with a lot of automatic adjustments

Weakness: Some buttons seem counterintuitive Lens exposed when viewing pictures May have defect in picture button

This is a nice little camera. We've been pretty happy with it. The primary button for taking pictures broke slightly (the ring around it fell off). We're going to have to see if the manufacturer covers it.

I bought it because it takes SD Ram and was a good price. Nice optical/digital zoom makes for a decent camera for a beginner.

If the part didn't fall off I would have rated it higher...

You can view the pictures without having the lens exposed by simply turning on the camera by holding the green "play" button for 2 seconds. The screen will power on for viewing while the lens stays closed.

Nikon Coolpix 5900

The Nikon Coolpix 5900 is a near-twin to the Nikon 7900 model that we reviewed just a few days back. About the only feature difference (other than the 5 megapixel sensor chip) is its lack of the vibration-reduction option in its movie mode. I did find some differences in image quality and performance though, that mean you'd do much better with the 7900 if you plan lots of low-light photography....

Nikon Coolpix 5900 First Impression Review

Several weeks ago at PMA in Orlando, Florida, Nikon announced their new point-and-shoot Coolpix digital camera lineup for 2005. Just below the flagship model of the lineup is the Nikon Coolpix 5900. The only notable difference between the Coolpix 5900 and the slightly more expensive Coolpix 7900 is the reduction in effective megapixels from 7.1 to 5.1. The Nikon Coolpix 5900 has the same hardware...
