Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Pocket sized. Loooong battery life. Amazing pictures. Adapability to taking bizarre photos.

Weakness: None!!!

I can't say enough good things about this camera.

Two years ago, I finally entered the Digital age with the 3.0 MP Sony camera. Within 3 months, the 5.0 MP came out and I haven't found anything that I have wanted to trade it in for; in fact, I have since bought 6 more of the 5.0 MP and given them as 16th Birthday, Wedding and Anniversary presents.

Why did I buy a digital camera?

Two reasons:
1) I own a SONY Viao laptop and was told that if I bought a SONY camera, I could use the same Memory Stick to download directly to my laptop. Being virtually inept at working a computer, this was a high selling point for me. I did not want cables, patches or any other gobble-de-gook to confuse me or clutter up my desk.

2) When the sales person at BEST BUY found out what I spent per MONTH on film and processing, they said that I could buy a digital camera PER MONTH!!!

Let's do the math: For my Elph camera, a roll of film would be around $3.00 at Walmart and processing around $12.00 with no extra photos printed.

That's $15.00 for film and processing.

Per week, I'd shoot between 5 and 10 rolls per DAY. Yes, folks, that's correct: 5 to 10 rolls per DAY! So, if I'm shooting 10 rolls per day @ $15.00 per roll, that's $150.00 per day, $750 per week, and a grand total of well...THREE GRAND per month.

I paid less than $400.00 for my PCS-10!

Why do I take so many photos? I'm a Landscape Architech, working on Big Buck projects of $200,00 or more. I document every single event and day for my clients, and at the end of the job, I present to them an album of the "Making of their Garden." That fact alone is the word of mouth advertising that keeps me chronically employed.

The first thing that I bought for the camera is a 128 mb Memory Stick and I now own 9 of them; 8 stored in my SONY case and one always in the camera. Instead of buying a GIANT MB stick, I intentionally stayed with the 128 mb for many reasons:

1) The price of $50.00 is pocket change: literally. I have a change jar that holds around $60.00 bucks worth of quarters and when it's full, a new Memory Stick is my prize.
2) Having 60 photos at 5.0 MB stored on each stick makes it incredibly easy to split up the job I'm working on or the vacation itinerary. This way, I can take 60 shots of a specific event, lock the stick and tuck it away.
3) I have ALL of my photowork done at Walmart and they can place 2 filled Memory sticks on ONE CD. This is cost effective and also can organize events.

I constantly hear about "slow shutter speed" from digital owners. IT DOES NOT EXIST WITH THIS CAMERA!!! I can fill up a Memory stick within 15 minutes of shooting a job with NO LAG TIME WHATSOEVER.

Yes! if you're using the flash, at night, and the zoom constantly, it will take 2.5 seconds between shots to do the next one.

Oh well.

Since I'm not shooting anything at night that I can use commercially and it's simply personal photos of concerts and parties, I can deal with the 2.5 seconds to recharge the battery.

This past weekend I was at the Chicago Celtic Fest and sat amongst 3 "serious" digital camera owners: one had a Nikon D100, another a Nikon D70 and another a Large Canon (make unknown.) They were lugging lens bags, extra batteries and continually were rubbing their necks under their camera straps.

Enough! I've had that life style with my beloved SLR Canon, back in the 70's! I carry my SONY 5.0 MP with me everywhere: 24/7. I have captured amazing events because of it's accessability and small size: epic storms rolling over the prairie; gravity defying truck accidents with semi's perched over a bridge, and beloved friends in casual moments.

I would NOT trade in this camera for ANY of the high cost, extra accessory digitals out there.

By the way: running my own business, I have to keep things cost effective. So, rather than spend money on any other camera equipment, which is sure to become obsolete before you get your bank statement, I take 100% of my work to Walmart. They now have the technology to put your "index" prints right on the CD itself and the cost per photo has dropped down to .19 cents per shot, with weekly specials.

I figure Walmart has much more money than I do and can constantly upgrade and improve their digital photo labs. Let them absorb the cost of technology; I'll keep the money in my pocket and go back to Paris!

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Very clear pictures, great action shots of my daughter’s soccer games. Video feature works great during games. Size makes it easy to take anywhere. Love all the available accessories, a BIG plus.

Weakness: So far only the weakness is the operator and trying to learn w/o reading the manual. Once I had time, the operation of it all is very simple.

This camera replaces my video/digital camera and my SLR camera that were stolen. I find that with this camera I have the best of both that I lost. I am heavy into editing my pics and now scrapbooking on the computer. This camera fills the bill nicely with both areas. I am making a lot of great memories and it works great on updating my web site for family and friends. Hope they keep the accessories coming. Bindy

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Fantastic camera!! I've always wanted a video and still pic camera. This does both. Clear, sharp photos whether on my pc or printing. Easy to use, as I am a novice!

Weakness: Other than smudging the LCD with my nose, I'd have to say that the zoom should work in the movie mode, too.

I am enjoying this camera. The pics are great. It's easy to use. I did buy a 128mb memory stick, as I quickly filled up the supplied 32mb stick. Now, I'm going to look around Houston for a photography class to take, preferably one that uses digital cameras.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Small, easy to use controls, pictures are great, will fit in your pocket, battery lasts a long time, softwear does a good job. Far better than my last camera

Weakness: None so far

If you are thinking about a 5 megapixel camera you can not go wrong with this one. Check around as I got a free 128 memory stick with mine, this you do need as the 32 is not big enough. If you think it is to much money, scrape it up as you will be the loser if you by a cheaper one.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: compact Size, Great MP, Easy to use

Weakness: re-charge of Flash can be annoying. Only USB 1.1

I've owned this camera for a little over 6 months & I like it a lot. It's compact enough to easily fit into my cargo-shorts pocket. At 5MP it gives you lots of room to adjust or crop, and although it doesn't have the Carl-Zeiss lense the photo quality is great. Good Color balance, etc. With the Movie ability I'm finding I don't even use my Sony MiniDV camcorder much anymore.

Weaknesses are few: The most annoying is the flash - which takes too long to recharge. Also in dark-room situations I've found Flash color-balance way off and even with the "AF Illuminator" turned on it will not focus well, but these are things that really shouldn't be expected from a compact camera.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Easy to use. Quality of photograph.

Weakness: Symbols on camera and settings can be confusing. A little heavy for a compact.

Overall the camera is easy to use and provides excellent quality of a picture for the camera expense. Its compact design allows it to be carried easy in ones pocket.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Ultra compact, great in movie mode, fairly high picture quality, very adaptive lets you manually adjust almost anything should you need to, yet it takes 2sec to just point and shoot in auto mode.

Weakness: 32MB memory just not enough (I mean really not enough you can take 11-12 pics at 5.0MP only). Software is poor but they all are, just use ACDSee, Photoshop etc. for advanced editing

I looked for a digital camera for over 6 months and have to say I had my eye on this one for a while. Its my first d.cam and I love it. Its small compact, fast, takes great pics (regardless fo what some people say here. they just don't know how to configure it). So how fast is fast? Well I've managed to take 2 consecutive shots with flash in about 4sec, from power on to first shot in less than 3sec. Without the flash is even faster, so this is it. The mpeg feature is also great, altho the mic recording level may be low if you shoot subjects in over 10feet. Comprehansive menu lets you control the least detail including left, center, auto etc. focus, iso, esposure and so on.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Compact; easy to operate; very good picture quality.

Weakness: Only 3x zoom; must have very steady hands to avoid blurry shots.

Used P10 in Disney World on vacation with the wife and kids and could not be happier with this little camera. It was easy to use and I can't get over how great our shots came out! We met up with my sister-in-law who was using a $1000 6 MP Canon Rebel and let me tell you her pictures were no better than ours! 4 X 6 prints ordered from Ofoto were stunning and an 8 X 10 printed on an Epson printer on glossy Kodak photo stock was spectacular. I highly recommend this camera. It's small, point-and-shoot simple, and it takes great pictures.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: None

Weakness: Blurry and out of focus pictures. Horrid customer service; no support from Sony; they do not care.

I would not recommend purchasing this product. We have had this camera for only 3 months and it has been in the Sony authorized repair shop most of that time. The only thing worse than the quality of the pictures is the lack of concern of the manufacturer themselves. No one in the service or technical support departments could have cared less. I will never purchase a Sony product again based on the lack of concern I received from Sony directly.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Took it out of the box and was snapping pics with this camera in about 2 minutes (hooked to AC pwr, had to charge the batteries a little before taking it with me). Good zoom, flash, great camera.

Weakness: Haven't found any yet.

My wife has a JVC Mini-DV Camcorder, and we've been using the .68 Megapixel camera mode to take pictures with, but that wasn't doing the job at all. When I saw this camera on sale (just before Christmas) I couldn't resist. My wife always has it with her, and I use it every chance I get. What a great camera! (All this to say, and we haven't even tried once to record anything moving yet...lol)

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: None

Weakness: Sony's warranty service

Sony's warranty service is terrible. I owned the camera 3 months took it on vacation and it quit after 3 days. Sony did not back their product and wanted me to pay $528 to fix a camera I paid $350 for new. I purchased the camera in December to take holiday pictures and to use on vacation. It quit the third day on our vacation. The pictures were grainy at best and the amount of 5 megapixel pictures allowed on the memory stick was very low. I found the software it came with hard to use.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: video snapshots work well. Fairly reasonable user interface on the camera.

Weakness: Slow automatic picture calculations. Red-eye reducer is ineffective. The charger and digital connector cover is a joke. Interface software is sub-standard for Sony.

Pre-shot computation time is excessive. If you want to take a quick snapshot, like a candid of your child doing something funny, tell the child to wait 20 seconds while the camera figures out what to do.

When you want to charge the camera or connect it to your computer, you have to open a silly dangling door held on by a piece of rubber. Sony should be embarrassed on that arrangement.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Great quality! I'm a photographer and finally received a digital, and I choose this one. I'm usual a Canon girl, but for the price for this quality and 5 megapixels, can't go wrong.

Weakness: Doesn't focus as easily as I would hope it would. Plus, the fact it runs on AA batteries, is a pain.

Great camera if you're willing to accept some faults, such as the focus and batteries. Otherwise I love it and I'm picky! Took me along time to decide on a digital camera and this one won.

I'd like to know where you bought a DSC-P10 that uses AA batteries, they don't exist. The DSC-P10 takes NP-FC10 NP-FC11 batteries, the cost sucks.

Weakness: Blurry pictures in low ligth, Doesn't focus as good as I would have thought. Must have subject still for good quality picture

I have Sony DV camera with Carl Zeiss lens. Picutes are not as detailed, but are very clear. I would recommend Sony products, just make sure they have a Carl Zeiss lens.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Sharp and clear pictures even on 1.2MP, small size, long lasting battery, copy to PC or view on a TV is simple and fast

Weakness: mpeg mode. Need to use a tripod for sharp zoomed picture

I am a newbie to digital photography and I enjoy this camera. It takes fabulous pictures on 1.2MP I had to upgrade the memory to 256MB. Now I am able to take 404 1.2MP shots on one stick. I was so worried about the battery life of such cameras but this camera has a very long battery life. On new year day I took 200 outdoor shots through view finder for about 2.5 hours and still 1 hour of battery life was there. I had compared the quality of pictures with a Canon A70 and I am proud to say SONY is the best

Lousy camera

Strengths: There are none

Weakness: Think of anything and it is sure to be a weakness for this camera

Here are only a few comments:
1) Even though I read the instruction manual thoroughly, most of the pictures are out of focus.
2) If I take pictures outside in sunlight, the exposures are so washed out you can't even make out what the picture is supposed to be. (Like shooting 400 speed film in bright sunlight with a time exposure)
3) Flash pictures made indoors appear to be time exposures with background lighting taking preference over the flash.
4) The battery is a proprietary item and is hard to locate a dealer that carries them.

This camera is truly a piece of crap. Unfortunately I paid a good price for this worthless piece of trash.

I LOVE MY CAMERA

Strengths: IT TAKES BEAUTIFUL PICTURES. THE BATTERY PACK LAST A LONG TIME. FAST. COMPACT. MEMORY STICK IS GREAT, COMPATIBLE.

Weakness: THE ZOOM LENSE STICKS.

THIS IS A WONDERFUL CAMERA. I HAD MINE FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS AND STILL WORKING. I TAKE AND SALE PICTURES AT NIGHT CLUBS AND PEOPLE LOVE THE QUALITY OF THE PICTURES. TOGTHER WITH THE SONY PORTABLE PRINTER, I HAD MADE PRETTY GOOD, FAST MONEY.

IT WOULD BE GREAT IF IT HAD A PHOTO EDITING SOFTWARE, THAT WASN'T VERY COMPLICATED.

THANK YOU.

DSC-P10 Review

Strengths: Long battery time. Easy to use design.

Weakness: Blurry shot problems. Slow between shots. Limited options.

Would not recommend this to an average user. Fortunately, for me, this was a hand-me-down from my parents because they experienced blurring problems. I get them too. Have used this on a wide variety of applications and have not been impressed with the results. Results are satisfactory in some cases, but never spectacular.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: everything!

Weakness: short warranty period

I love my sony p10. It is very easy to use and the battery last a long time. Everything that you need to start is included in the box. no need to buy any extra accessories. The price of the memory stick has come down so that is an incentive. I would recommend getting at least 128mb or more memory stick. Online tech support is very good. I have only had my camera for 2 months and it beats my olympus c-3000 hands down, for size and easy of use. All the controls are self explantory. you can switch from auto to manual and control you settings. Plus it has the sony name! I recommend this camera to anyone who was true value for their money!

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: very nice picture resolution, size, easy to use, and lots of option to take pictures!!

Weakness: none.. i'm just loving it !!!

I've been taking my Sony camera everywhere i go. Pictures come out soo clear. I love the scene choices, and the auto focus mode is a PLUS. Even on 3 megapixels, pictures come out clear -- imagine on 5 megapixels. Definitely get the 128mb or higher for when you get hold of this camera and start shooting, you will never want to stop !!!

I highly recommend this camera for people that loves to take pictures. It's the best thing for memory making !!!

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Nice and compact. Really easy to use. Battery last pretty long before charges.

Weakness: Find it to be a little slow in allowing me to quickly take another picture. Can't believe SONY would supply such a small memory card. Get ready to buy at least 128meg which is more than enough.

If your looking for a good all round camera, you won't be sorry with this one. I love it and the pictures I'm getting are really nice quality. I take the CD after playing with the pics for a while and take the CD to the photo lab for printing.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: size, features

Weakness: sony images still not as good as olympus

wow, what an improvement over my p-9.
the one gig memory stick pro holds 50 minutes
of 640x480 movies, over 700 pics at 5 meg.
cool histogram in viewfinder shows light
composition of taken and about to be taken
images. snow and beach added to scene choices,
and now 3 autofocus modes. with zoom 3.0 at
5 megapixels, a seriously cropped image still
prints nicely at 8x10 inches. digital zoom
kicks in and increases as resolution is lowered.
smaller and lighter than p-9, improved accessories,
but the manual shows a p-12 ( next to come ? )
as well as the 3.2 meg p-8 which i have not yet seen.
editing movies in camera is easier than with my
software. warning to all: i dissed 58 images on
my memory stick on my sony p-707 by changing
sticks while it was still recording last taken
image. corrupted data on all images, not just last.
even though camera said chip full when i was trying
to taken another picture.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P10 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Great pictures, video, & sound; clear, bright LCD; compact size; easy-to-use menu interface; good button placement (easy-to-use w/ one hand); capable of using large-sized media (up to 1GB).

Weakness: When using the viewfinder, the LCD tends to get smudged by user's nose. Other than that, there are no other weaknesses.

Love this camera. I've been shopping around for the smallest camera I could find with manual features. I settled on this one, and am not disappointed. Purists would argue that it's not truly manual, but that would require a huge clunker. I prefer carrying around this little wonder.
