Canon SD990 is one of the top of the line camera

Strengths: Excellent image quality,Very sharp pics. According to tests, less noise that the Canon 8 Megapixel models. New Processor. Has manual controls.

Weakness: Video is only 640x480.

Well I purchased it after reviewing and compare it with SD950 which I gave it to my son, and I am pleased I did! The camera (I selected the silver model) is very sharp-looking and takes excellent pictures and video. It focuses sharp and red-eye is almost non-existent. I used the photos with Photoshop and it came well also. The previous one SD950 is also very good,I am using Powershot G2 and SLR 30D,it was Excellent,I am using Canon Cameras Since 1973.Usually i use the SD models as a pocket camera.

Canon SD990 Is one of the Best

iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon.iSAPS works with the advanced DIGIC 4 Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.
A new Face Self-Timer automatically detects an increase in the number of faces and makes the appropriate adjustments. Intelligent Contrast Correction DIGIC 4 also makes possible the new i-Contrast (Intelligent Contrast Correction) system, which controls the compensation level in pixel units to brighten dark areas while leaving bright areas unchanged for better images where the main subject is dark, and more natural transition.
The SD990 IS Digital ELPH features ISO 1600(ISO can be expanded to 3200)and High ISO Auto settings that reduce the effects of camera shake and sharpen subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility.

You Get What You Pay For

Strengths: This camera out of the box has worked and have not had any problems. I take each day of the week between 175 to 225 photos of a job site under construction, photos are of buildings and details.

Weakness: Not that I have found

This has been a good choice and workes in sun, shade, interiors. Details pop out and it is so easy to move from one mode to another. Took on vacation with us and never used my SLR this camers has impressed all my frends and at work the results from it are stunning.

Great pictures, bad movies

Strengths: Pictures are clear, image stabilization works well. Happy with colors.

Weakness: Movies, Movies, Movies

We purchased this camera to upgrade from a Canon A5XX that the kids have started to use. We were very happy with the quality of the pictures, but EXTREMELY disappointed with the high-quality movie snippets that the camera takes. Unfortunately, Canon decided to switch to Quicktime for the format which does not seem to play well on PCs(even high end ones), though they do play fine on Macs. The movies "stutter" for lack of a better description, making the unwatchable. I tried a Quicktime alternative to play them and they were fine, but I cannot count on others that I share them with having anything besides the Apple standard. It is Apples right to make Quicktime perform poorly on PCs, but unfortunately users of this camera suffer for it. I will be taking this camera back and looking for one that has AVI movie output.

To give a Digital Camera a poor rating because it doesn't take awesome video clips is stupid. And just because your computer doesn't play Quicktime video clips well, doesn't have any bearing on the product.

Go buy yourself an HD Video Camera, and leave digital cameras to photography. Other professional reviews were disappointed that Canon didn't offer HD video on this camera, but let's face it. Buying a Toyota Camry doesn't mean you'll get decent ability to pull a trailer around. Sure you can weld a hitch to the frame, but don't expect it to pull a trailer like a truck does.

Judge a product on what it was MADE TO DO, not what it wasn't.

I just ordered this camera based on numerous online professional reviews I've read. I'll be posting a review in the near future (sometime after Christmas).

One Excellent Point & Shoot!
Strengths: Excellent image quality, Battery life, Image Stabilizer, Beautiful and hefty metal body, Many manual modes for a subcompact, DIGIC 4 processor, Made in Japan
Weaknesses: Very slight purple fringing, No wide angle lens
Summary: After using a cheaply-built Samsung S630 for the past year, I decided it was ready to step up to a quality camera that I could hold onto for a long time. I was set on purchasing an SD950(this camera's predecessor) until I found this on sale at Dell. Fortunately, the extra pixels do not translate to more noise, presumably due to the new DIGIC 4. Images are always crisp and very detailed, even when blown up on my 20" monitor. Colors are the most natural I have seen from a non-SLR. Every picture I take in manual mode requires no post-processing. I thought I would have to improve something, but I never do.

save your pennies and go with this camera. Another winner from Canon!

On your PC launch Quicktime and go to View. Choose "Play All Frames" from the View menu. This will stop it from stuttering which is caused by it not playing all the frames.

Camera Labs – Canon PowerShot SD990 IS ELPH review

Canon’s PowerShot SD990 IS ELPH is a good solid compact camera with some strong features. With a considerable 14.7 Megapixels, it’s the highest resolution model in the ELPH range, and also the only one which offers manual control over exposure. Add to that a small but great quality screen, an optical viewfinder which can massively extend battery life, and Canon’s latest fast DIGIC 4...

Canon PowerShot SD990 IS Review

The 900-series of the Canon ELPH digital cameras is usually pretty deluxe, and the Canon SD990 doesn't disappoint. In addition to the Canon SD990's 14.7-megapixel sensor, 2.5-inch LCD, and 3.7x lens, this curvy little digital camera has a full Manual exposure mode that should pique the interest of photographers wanting a little more control. Image stabilization is of course standard on the Canon...

Canon PowerShot SD990 IS (silver)

THE GOOD: Excellent picture quality; very good shooting options for its size. THE BAD: Disappointing lens specs; mixed performance; high-resolution sensor adds little benefit; no HD video. THE BOTTOM LINE: The Canon PowerShot SD990 IS is a fine ultracompact camera, but its price-to-feature benefits are questionable.
