A Great Camera

Strengths: Easy to use menu, large LCD screen, light and small.

Weakness: None yet

I purchased this camera to replace my Kodak easy share, which means I am a beginner photographer. My main concern was that the camera would be small and light enough to carry around with me all day. I am very happy with this camera, It is easy to read, the menu is simple but with lots of options and the photographs look great.

Nice improvement over the P200

Strengths: Easy to use controls, good ergonomics, bright flash, large LCD panel, wide zoom, excellent picture quality.

Weakness: LCD panel isn't high resolution, uses expensive Memory Stick Pro Duo cards

Sony really didn't have to do much to improve the value laden P200 (compared with other top end 7MP cameras it was competing with). The one issue I always had with the now discontinued Sony P series cameras though was the shape and location of controls. Sony really didn't have to do much to improve the value laden P200 (compared with other top end 7MP cameras it was competing with). The one issue I always had with the now discontinued Sony P series cameras though was the shape and location of controls. The long narrow body made it awkward to hold and the power and the power button and shutter release button were so close to each other it was easy to turn off the camera when you wanted to take a picture.

All that is solved now with the more traditional square body of the W series. The W100 is a bit bigger and heavier than it's siblings, the W50 and W70. For that extra size though you get rewarded with a better lens (not just more MP stuffed into the same lens as the W50 or W70). Enlarged pictures look great and you really have to look hard to detect the purple fringing that you often see in photos taken with cameras that are too small for the MPs they claim to have.

The scene selection wheel has also been improved. No more guessing what an icon means as the camera will tell you when you select it. One other change Sony made was to remove the photo review button from the scene selection wheel and give this function it's due respect with a button of its own. This means you can see the pictures you taken without having to leave the photo mode. The W series also has a bigger screen, however, the resolution did not increase proportionately so if you zoom in to a photo it will appear grainy, though it's not once you print it out or view it on a regular TV or monitor.

Over all The W100 is a great camera, and remains a terrific value over it's peers. The only downside is that it uses more expensive Memory Stick Pro Duo cards. I'm giving the W100 4 stars out of 5 because I'd like to see it slim down a 1/4 inch and I'd like too see a higher resolution screen.

I found a great deal on this camera and am so glad I did not wait any longer. This camera to so user friendly. I found a great deal on this camera and am so glad I did not wait any longer. This camera to so user friendly. The screen looks great and the lack of steady shot doesn't seem to be a problem on the 150+ pictures I have taken. Shot videos on Thanksgiving and they look awesome. Another bonus is all the memory sticks available to use with this camera have just starting coming way down in price - 4GB less than $50. What a deal!!

Great camera

Strengths: Large display; viewfinder; battery life, fast response

Weakness: LCD screen is VERY fragile. You drop it, and a cracked LCD screen will result.

Overall a very nice camera. I am very satisfied with the camera. It is one of the best cameras (probably the best) in this price range. Got this for $314 after tax online. LCD is quite big and still battery life is good. 8.1MP so nothing to mention about the picture quality.Takes very good videos as well. I highly recommend this camera. user friendly!

Cyber-shot DSC-W100 Digital Camera Review

Strengths: - Compact - Large 2.5" LCD Display - Long Battery Life - High 8.1 MP Photos - Stronger flash than lower models. - High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 1250) allow low light shots without flash.

Weakness: No significant weaksnesses. I was dissappointed to see that my 2-128MB Memory Sticks were not compatible. Need Duo's. No biggy. No steady shot but I knew that going in.

I owned a 4 year old Sony DSC 3 MP digital camera and put it through it's paces taking nearly 10,000 shots and it would still be working today if it hadn't been dropped on the lense. This DSC-W100 is such an improvement across the board for me. I decided to go back with Sony and I'm not disappointed. Although I like the thinner style of the DSC T series, my wife likes to have a view finder now and then and the DSC-W100 has that. The battery life is significantly better than my 4 year old camera. I took it to France with an extra battery pack and never came close to needing to switch out while shooting 200+ photos per day with some flash and some video too. When I got back to the states I returned the unused battery pack.

I did spring for the Sony 4 extended year warranty with accident coverage. I've gotten away with dropping my 4 year old camera a half dozen times or so until this last time on the lense. With this big screen I believe it's not going to survive as many drops.
